This may be a stupid question, but since I don't know the answer I'll ask the experts. When breeding the GB, is it like Thayeri in that you're not sure what phase will come from the eggs? Will Blairi come from Alterna or are they separate? If a Blairi and Alterna mate, what, most likely, will be the offspring? I guess that's three questions!!

I am by no means an expert. I can say this. When you breed 2 blairs you "are most likely" to get mostly blairs. Now... Is there a posibility to produce an Alterna from this union? Yes... But the chances vary based on location. Here is something else to think about. Will they be lite phase or dark phase or medium? Again, no equation to give you this information either. This is what makes breeding Alterna so exciting...

A personal example is that I have 2 dark alterna phase from one locality. She laid 9 eggs. 2 were identified as slugs immediately. 7 went on to incubate. 6 ended up hatching but only 4 made it. The six were as follows... 1 weird blair, 1 normal blair, 1 dark alterna, 3 medium alterna.

So, you just never know what your going to get.

Best Wishes,

Steven Owens

These guys just finished hatching and you can see that they vary from your standard blairs to narrow pin stripe alternas. these are juno roads, one parent a light alterna phase the other parent a dark alterna phase. they seem to produce one or two blairs per clutch.

These 4 snakes just hatched - the mother an intermediate phase, Loma alta from John H. Stock and a male light blairs from 1.4 north of loma. Not what I was expecting, but they are nice.

Thanks, He is either going to be smoking or ugly...I'm not sure which untill he sheds. The red is like a brick red, but it might not be totally clean, however if he is as light as he looks now he will be nice.

Great looking snakes! I absolutely love alterna. I just picked up a female blair's to go with my male blair's. I hope to breed them in a couple of years.
Thanks for all the help
