Lajitas......no takers

Doug Beckwith Oct 19, 2007 08:29 PM

The Lajitas Resort was ordered by a judge to be sold at auction in San Antonio yesterday. The local Alpine radio news reported that only one qualified bidder showed up, only to walk out before submitting a bid.

It seems that Steve Smith's boondoggle is such that no one wants it, not even for pennies on the dollar vs. what he put into that place over the years.

CB, was the one you found out active in the sunlight or hanging out back in a crevice, or ...? I'm always curious about ones found in daylight. Anyone else find them active in daylight? I've personally seen one AOR just before dusk and I found one under a rock in Coahuila many years ago (the photo here). --HW

Thanks for the kind words on the Coahuila animal. When I found it, I remember thinking it looked very much like the type specimen of Leonis. My shout was probably heard all the way to the US border when I saw it under the rock! It is one of three I know of from a small mountain range that the road heading north from Saltillo (Coahuila) crosses. I know it by the name Cuesta la Muralla. Two were road-collected (not by me) in the late 1970s and I found this one on a cloudy morning flipping rocks in the mountain pass. All three animals looked very different from one another. I'd post photos, but don't have any of the others. I wish we knew more about the range of Mexican flavors of alterna...

Sorry for the slow reply...I've been offline for a few days.

Cheers,
Henry W.

What month was it when you flipped that snake? Do you have any photos of the lepidus or Coleonyx from Cuesta?

If you get a chance give me a call at 210-860-0594 or shoot me your phone number and I'll call you.

Hi Joe,

I found the snake on August 11 at 10am. I don't know what the Coleonyx or lepidus are like at Cuesta -- never found any there. In fact, I didn't find much else there at all other than a few very common things I can't recall without looking at my notes. What's the best time to call or has that answered all you wanted to know? --Henry W.

Thanks, I did have a few more things for you. That was my cell phone number I gave you, so you can call me anytime tomorrow, or shoot me your number and a time to my e-mail (joe(dot)forks(at)gmail(dot)com) and I'll pay for the call. I appreciate it.

Hey Keith,

The season is essentially over up here in northern Brewster, but I would imagine some things are still moving down south at least until this cold front arrives that is expected to come through tomorrow. While the afternoon temps have been in the low 80's up here it does cool off fairly quickly. In fact we were at 39 yesterday morning here at my house after being in the low 50's upper 40's the last week or so.

Norman and I went down to the Xmas last Friday. Temps were fine, but we saw very little after sundown after seeing a handful of snakes on the way down and shortly after getting there. We saw zero snakes on the way back to Alpine that night.

One thing of interest on a night between the tables south of Alpine about 10 days ago. We spotted a pictigaster in a small acacia tree that was hanging out over a cut about 20 to 25 feet above the ground.

It might have been going after Cicadas up there. I was at Buzzs
one day and he was feeding them to his pics by tongs.

awww cmon doug, you should purchase it with money from your petty cash fund, and host all your "upper crust" parties there!!

Doug Beckwith Oct 25, 2007 09:16 PM

It seems you are partaking in the peyote laden Kool Aid once again there Jon. If only your halucinogenic beliefs were true Mr. retired before I'm 50 man... For some strange reason you keep getting the two of us mixed up. For the record: It is you who is retired before hitting 50, has the palacial estate in AZ, and it is you who has the huge slush fund and tax payer funded pension w/ health insurance benes, not me oh dislexic one. It is me/us who moved to Alpine last year, which of course requires a vow of poverty to make that move.

Just remember you started this and thought I would set the record straight one last time. I will no longer be baited into responding to such backasswords statements such as your latest post here. LOL
