i was wondering if i should have me water bowl over part of the hteating pad, or not over it at all.

The water does not need heat.

I put mine on the cool side. I figure I'd rather have cool water to drink or to soak in to cool off and not warm water.

I was told that while the water bowl should not be placed in the heat side, it should not be too cold either since cold water can make the snake succeptible to resp. infect. I have mine on the cool side but with tepid water; that seems to keep the water at ambient temp.

Oh yeah, and 3 children!

Or keep it in the center. The only real benefit to keeping a water dish on the heat mat is to help keep humidity up, but this also results in too high of humidity if the enclosure is decent at keeping in humidity levels. Also it will evaporate the water quicker and make the water rather warm.

I've always put mine halfway on the heatpad. This way it does create a little humidity, and the water isn't too cold or hot. All my balls/boas seem to enjoy this, especially my boas because they'll soak for hours in the water bowls.
