must read....new law banning pythons

chamsrcool Jul 01, 2004 10:08 AM

i got this e-mail today:

this email is to inform you of a bill in NY that if passed will have detrimental effects on reptile breeders, commercial supply businesses and hobbyists alike. This bill has passed the assembly and the senate within New York and is currently setting on the Governors desk awaiting his signature to become law. He may sign off on it this week or may wait several months to make his decision it is imperative that we act NOW! If this bill passes they way it is currently written, it will be an all out ban on boas, pythons, monitors, crocodilians and venomous species of reptiles. There is a clause that says the state may grant permission for a permit to keep and maintain any animals listed within this bill as pets only, if you owned them prior to this bill which will take effect January of 2005 if we don’t stop it. In other words if you own any animals listed within this bill and apply for a permit to keep them, IF they grant you this permit you may never breed them, you are allowed to maintain them as pets only. I live outside of the state of NY and am trying to rally everyone outside and within I can but I need you to do the same. The governor and his office will put more priority on the concerns of their residents then they will on people such as myself. Perhaps you know someone in New York who is not aware of this threat, and your help is needed to contact them about this.

I urge each and everyone of you to please get as active as you can. Post fliers within pets stores, get your friends to write in, call your local representatives, contact any kind of business within the state of NY that sells reptiles or supplies. These businesses have detailed mailing list, ask them to ad a flier next time their mailer goes out. Anything you can think of to spread the word. Also please tell everyone to keep their letters professional and polite we don’t want to sound like a bunch of thugs. Below are three methods to contact the Governor and oppose this bill. If you have the time I urge you to use all three methods.

This law if passed will snowball through other states. A couple years ago NYC passed a law that banned many species of animals(reptile, mammals etc.). Last year Chicago copied and tried to pass that very same law as well. They literally copied it, Chicago deleted references to NYC and replaced them with Chicago, in a couple of spots the forgot to remove the references to NYC. SO this ordinance they were trying to pass in Chicago had references to both cities within it. For the time being we stopped them there but that’s just an example of how one state or city does something and the rest follow.

you're in luck we've all been talking about this in most forums already so it seemes like people, myself included have been getting off their butts & emailing the governor so hopefully the word will just keep spreading & victory will be ours!...lol

Is this bill real? I'm in California but I'm still worried. But this looked kinda phoney to me especially with that strange Governer email address.

It's very real. The only reason the address to his web-based email submission looks strange is because it's in IP address form. Every web address points to an IP address. That website is legitimate.

Ok thanks.

Please take this seriously!! This is a strong bill that will pass if we are not heard.
www.wnyherp.org/legal-action/New-York-animal-ban.html
Please stand up and be counted!! Every New York herper that possess any boids...ball pythons, etc. will lose the right to keep, breed and sell them!!! This will be LAW and all animals will be subject to confiscations no questions asked!! This will most likely snowball to other states and we will all be fu..ed!!!
Check out the link and state your mind!!
Thankyou fellow herpers!

help people when venomous laws start passing??? Probably not, so not all of us feel the need to help. I hope it becomes illegal, and then you will all say....Maybe we should have stuck by the venomous keepers....HaHaHa

This week two states passed the law making it illegal to talk on cell phones while driving. They piggy backed straight off NY law.
Granted this is a small example, but it happens.

So you might reconsider laughing about this law.
I'm not sure if you feel venomous herpers were not supported previously, or you are speculating on future events, but we should value our rights more than to turn on each other.

Well said Tom......and I am surprised by your comment bachman...your attitude and persona generally speaks of a positive and helpful herper....(with the occassional sarcasm, but this particular post has me floored.

This bill DOES and WILL impact venomous keepers as well and even though I live in FL (so far, so good.......no laws)....everyone should voice their opinions because we all know that these things snowball. And even though I do not keep any hots....your reptile "pets" are just as important to you as mine are to me.....so do not make assumptions that not all would back you for your rights.

Crocodilians...Venomous...Pythons..........whatever you keep....we're all herpers!

bachman Jul 02, 2004 07:00 PM

Okay, I was a little/alot ignorant with that post, but I have just met so many well known breeders that shun venomous keeping (even though they used to do it themselves).

You guys are right. We all need to stick together.

Thanks for the turnaround on the attitude. If we all group together on this we are a much stronger lobby. This bill will impact everyone across the country in one way or another. Califormia and New York seem to be the states that others look at when examining these kind of things.
State your concerns. It is the squeaky wheel that gets oiled!!!

he didn't have a turn around...just a brain fart before....he knows all laws will affect every one of us.....

Bachman knows more about herps than most of the people in here will ever read about and then forget...trust me...

his problem is that he knows venomous bigtime...more than anything else...he studied it all..but his passion is for hot stuff.......

and he knows that ball people for example think they are too good and too smart to have vens.......they and all people sort of shun ven keepers a little.(or alot).......

he knows what vens can do also........and he has free held and owned more stuff than most zoos have the balls to keep......

anyways........

welcome to the ball world Chad.............

......and yes.....all laws suck....

America the free.....like the song says ....then why does it cost so much to live??????????

......ban all laws..........we need free range for all animals.............

support trappers, huntingmfishing, and pet/breeding of animals....they are trying to stop it all........

trapping is banned in alot of states....and....they now have a nuisance animal problem alot.....

wonder why.........?

.........have fun....eat a cat......take a hike...

people???.........people are stupid.........
really???......really.........

bachman Jul 03, 2004 05:30 PM

Alot of times I post before I think about how it's going to turn out, but thats life as a herper (most herpers can't get along forever).

Balls are cool, and alot less work, plus they are easier to sell. If I can't do what I really want to do, I'm gonna do it for the $$...LOL.

Delaware already passed these stupid laws 2 or 3 years ago.

How does cat taste? I'll try one of the roaming lil killers.

All the Balls I got from you are kickin Butt!! Thanks!!
