getting weight back on Luna?

lele Sep 09, 2004 01:37 PM

Hi all,

After Luna's 2nd clutch a couple weeks ago I am trying to get some weight back on her, but am concerned about over feeding. Can i just give her what she wants for a few weeks to get her weight up? She is loving supers right now and will eat several (5 or 6) a day. Some days that is along with a butter worm or two and a few crix. It's just like she's a baby again

What are your thoughts, experience?

thanks,
lele

there are pro's and cons to this.
in my experience with female chams after egg deposition i ration my chameleons to half what they normally eat and slowly work up to the norm within a couple of weeks.
you will probably get different opinions and conflicting opinions in this post but anywho thats my experience

If she likes waxworms they might help too. Higher in fat and calories per unit.

Thanks to both...

yes, she does like wax worms (though I don't have any)and I am waiting for some silkies to mature (she ate the big ones I have only newly hatched ones right now). But I guess my main concern is should I just let her eat all she wants for awhile until she begins to fill out? Her ribs are still showing and she does seem ravenous - she laid 42 eggs on August 27 - but otherwise perfectly fine.

chamellio - b/c she has been gravid more often then not in the 12 months I have had her (infertile) and going on intermittent hunger strikes I don't know what normal is for her! LOL! ;/

I would let her eat all that she can. I did a lot of reading after my problems with Orion, and that seems like it would work out fine. You might want to split her feedings in to two per day. That way she won't gorge herself too much at each feeding but still get lots of food per day.
I am shocked to hear you say you fed her silkies!!! lol
YOu might also want to split her food types into the two feedings. I would try and get some waxworms, those help a bit. Other than that just make sure she is getting LOTS to drink to keep her hydrated and to digest all the extra food she's mowing down. Hope she fattens up for ya!!

i agree with giving her lots of water, after laying over 40 eggs you wanna keep her as hydrated as possible even if this means giving her water VIA pipette. anyway good luck :D

thanks. no problem there! she loves to just sit under her dripper and take a shower. I always offer her some by hand just in case she wants more. She is good and hydrated.

Hi Lindsay,

I have been giving her a morning meal and then again in late afternoon, early evening with enough time to still bask before lights out. I guess I will just let her regulate herself until she chunks up a bit. She is getting lots of water as she likes to shower under her dripper! I am luckiy there
