The Plated Lizard, Gerrhosaurus is a genus of lizards native to southern and eastern Africa. There are six species found in dry, rocky semi-open habitats. The Sudan plated lizard is the most heavily plated of the Gerrhosaururidae, the most readily identifiable, and the most common in reptile collections. The Sudan Plated lizard is a diurnal reptile, active mostly during the day and sleeping at night. When threatened, they will run for cover and wedge themselves in rocky crevices and with their heavy armour, this makes them almost invulnerable to predators.

Sudan Plated lizards are omnivores, living from a wide range of vegetable matter, insects and on occasion small vertebrates like other lizards and rodents.
