Found virtually all over the world, with a few exceptions, four subfamilies of Viperidae are currently recognized, and this category is for three of those subfamilies. Until relatively recently, two other genera Azemiops and Causus were also included in the Viperinae, however, they were eventually considered so distinctive within the Viperidae, that separate subfamilies were created for them. These groups, together with the genera currently recognized as belonging to the Viperinae, are often referred to collectively as the true vipers.

Viperids have a pair of long hollow fangs used to inject venom from glands located towards the rear of the upper jaws, just behind the eyes. Each of the two fangs is at the front of the mouth and can rotate back and forth. When not in use, the fangs fold back against the roof of the mouth and are enclosed in a membranous sheath.

Here you may post messages or questions pertaining to all aspects and issues regarding the keeping, breeding, health, and conservation of Viperidae.
