Hi,
My 14 year old German Shepherd may be getting near the end. For a few months now she has had difficulty standing and walking. She can still go out for a (slow, short) walk but she falls frequently and has trouble getting up especially on a hardwood or tiled floor. She has been losing control of her bowels and frequently defecates without being aware of it. For the last 24 hours she's had diarrhea and doesn't know that either. I've had to clean the carpet 5 times and don't even know how to go about cleaning her - she never liked baths at the best of time and I can't imagine getting her in and out of the tub now! I am actually concerned that she is a health hazard - everywhere she goes there is likely to be fecal matter so apart from the inconvenience I'm worried that she could make us sick.
Am I being selfish and lazy because I don't want to clean up crap any more or is this a sign that it is finally time?
Please help.

Hello,
We've been hoping to adopt a stray puppy from Greece once his rabies vaccine and waiting period are finished. However we were informed that an eye issue on the puppy has developed. The foster carerer's local vet doesn't know what it is but said it could be causing the puppy pain, which could in turn be making him sometimes nervous in recent weeks.
I've attached a photo of the growth (maybe?) on the eye. Does anyone recognise this?
Any idea?

I know how you feel, I remember when my best friend "went away" I was miserable for a couple of months constantly not going to work, not thinking how I looked and I just stopped talking people which later on made them stop trying to talk to me but my dog didn't he was there the whole time comforting me, making me feel safe I don't know if it was because I was his owner and that I have his food but I don't care because he didn't gave up on me.

After all of these years I don't think I'm thrilled with this new format. I realize the Shiba Inu forum has been virtually non-existant but I checked everyday to see if a new member posted a question there. Now the question can get lost or easily overlooked. I guess the time has come and it may be goodbye forever.

Hi Amanda! It's been a long long time since I have checked here. The Shiba forum as we knew it is gone. In fact the whole dog forums as we knew it is gone. It's terrible transition from what was. No I'm not on FB or IG. I have been in contact with Melissa a couple of times. I still have Toshi who will be 15½ this year. Wish the old gang could get together once again to start our own forum. Hope all is well!

Tornado was abandoned when he was about 1 or 2 years old by a drug addict. My boyfriend and his brother found him and saved him. My boyfriend adopted him and has been here ever since. My question is does anyone know of anything besides care credit that will help with vet bills and surgeries because I am trying my best to just feed us and pay all my bills just like everyone else.
I've heard so many times "you shouldn't have a pet if you can't afford it" I'm not going to put down my boyfriend for taking in a dog so he wouldn't get put down and did the best he could 
I actually made a go fund me account too to try and get donations to help but you can only annoy people so much lol

Life happens. Reach out to local shelters and rescues and see if they offer low cost options or know of one in your area

My bitch has missed twice now from matings, both did progesterone tests prior to mating and went on the day as advised, not in house tests.
Just mated again and we got 3 matings. Prior to mating we had an ultrasound to confirm nothing abnormal was going on and also did a vaginal swab, conf strep so have a course of ab's - this was a month prior to season, she came in early.
Was advised by a repro vet to give herpes vacs at the beg pre mating which we've done and then a course of ab's after first mating which we are doing.
While not common there is a concern that she might be dropping her progesterone levels too quickly so will be testing again in 2 weeks time to check and to keep doing that until the scan.
Was advised that progesterone in oil is to give if drops too low.
Now while my vets have this info and amount to give I was wondering what are the side effects of doing this and how common are the side effects.
Each time we know she did ovulate.
Any other info is helpful if you have any aside from the side effects from giving this product.
I really want this litter.
To note first stud dog was older and not sperm tested but had provided a litter once before.
2nd stud dog a lot younger and had his sperm checked and he is fertile, also recently producing a litter.
Tried this dog again for this mating too.

Our dogs love chicken. We only feed raw, and it has changed our dogs' coats and they haven't been sick in years. Raw chicken is safe, cooked chicken is not.

We give our dog root chews. He not only gets bad bread but also is a power chewer so we are afraid to give him anything too hard to chew on since he will definetly break one or several of his teeth. The roots chews are soft yet keep him occupied for long periods of time and clean his teeth and gums. Here's some helpful info:

We switched our dogs to a raw diet, and it helped their coats and also thier breath. I'm assuming the bones were really helping to clean thier teeth. Hope this helps!

On May 5,2014 Mr. Higgins had a slight limp. He was taken to the veternarian immediately and put on medication. That same evening he suddenly lost complete use of both his hind limbs. After seeing a neurologist, he was diagnosed with T3-L3 myelopathy. Since I can not afford surgery at this time, his condition is currently being managed with medication. I had to choose this option knowing that without the surgery the condition could progress resulting in permanent paralysis. I was told there is a 90% chance that the surgery would be a success. However, the success rate decreases the longer he goes without the procedure.
Here is little background for those of you that do not know him personally. He is only 3 years old. In 2012 he was picked up by animal control as a stray in Kankakee. He was then rescued by a veternary technician school. At the school he was a "patient" and assisted in teaching technician students. I fell in love with him the second I saw him walk into my school. They finally allowed me to adopt him, and give him a home like he deserved. He is great with my children and everyone he meets.
He has been through alot and deserves a chance. He is truly my best friend. So I am asking everyone to please help. Please share this with everyone you know. If I am unable to come up with enough money for his surgery, which was estimated between $5500 and $7800, then the money will go towards a cart (doggie wheelchair). This way he can at least be mobile again and enjoy life. I know he has touched many and he is truly one of a kind. I really do love him more than most would understand. Finally, I want to thank everyone in advance for their help. Even if you can not help financially, you reading this and sharing it with someone else helps. Thanks again for your time, help, and compasion.

Apparantly that`s not the case since people keep breeding my epileptic pharaoh hound`s littermates.

As You can see a lot about shows & success but not a word about littermate`s hereditary epilepsy.
When Kenya got ill it came as a surprise to everyone that pharaoh hounds could have this disease. That`s what makes me wonder if it`s so rare why are we so unable not to use that litter for breeding? If we can't put aside a litter in which there`s hereditary epilepsy then what are we able not to use for breeding? A litter in which a puppy is born without legs..? It`s not an achievent not to use the dog with epilepsy. It probably has big difficulties to do the task at hands anyway... to successfully breed & in case of a female pharaoh hound carry a full term pregnancy & take care of puppies adequately. The difficulty is: not to use his/hers littermates. There`s already seizuring dogs & dogs with seizuring littermates in almost every pharaoh hound`s pedigree so why on Earth does the self-appointed lovers of this breed want to add to that horrible finding? Why do they want to make such a drastic mistake and injustice for the breed they claim to love. I have no other answer than the biblical greed. The ambition to success in dog shows. If you think about money wise You will only loose the price of the breeding prospect puppy which turned out to be a littermate of epileptic dog. In US it`s around 1000$ though what I paid for Kenya was close to 1300€. Still small price to pay to be a true savior of the breed. To not be so damn greedy that You have to earn from Your investment. What those people who do not even own Kenya`s littermates but still considered it a good idea to use them thought is beyond me.
Of one thing I have been immensely proud of: No-one in US has used Kenya`s litter mates and for me that speaks volumes!!
I am the owner of Farao Anubis Kaliber. Kenya was put down because of idiopathic epilepsy at the age of 1 year & 5 months on August 18th 2010. I do not own any pharaoh hounds currently and my sincerest hope is that none of the progeny from Farao Anubis litter born on March 27th 2009 will be used for breeding. If people who breed them has no sense then please all of You who haven't yet mixed that litter and its offspring and the offspring of that offspring into your pharaoh hounds` pedigrees do not do that or we will have more epileptic pharaoh hounds in our dogs` pedigrees worldwide soon.

Hi Everyone,
We are going to be adding a new pup, possibly this weekend! After much family discussion, spending time with Brewster and pups to make sure he can still behave around them (haha), asking around for breeder references, interviewing and being interviewed by a few breeders, talking to a few trainers and dog gyms, and thoroughly picking Michelle's brain (thanks again, btw!!!), we decided to move forward and we have found a pup at a breeder in South Carolina. She is about 11 weeks old. I am flying down there this weekend. I rented a car so that I can drive to the breeder's house to meet them and their dogs, and make sure everything is kosher before we finalize. I expect everything will be because I know of a few people who have their dogs and speak very highly of them. If all goes well I will fly home with our new girl Sunday night. We are naming her Piper. I need to think of a fancier registration name. I was thinking "(Breeder Name)'s Sweet Carolina" (like Sweet Caroline), but the kids are set on Piper, and I like it, too.
Wish us luck. This should be interesting!

This is the sort of shenanigans that goes on at our house. I need to get Brewster back into some classes to neaten up his obedience skills before we get a pup in. I am realizing lately how when the kids give him commands he throws out all sorts of behaviors before they are requested (and I'm guessing it's because they have rewarded this in the past).
The kids thought they were pretty funny with this ending they devised.

I don't think I'd ever get Artemis to bark on command. The only time she barks is if someone knocks at the door--or if another dog gets in her face.
I love how Brewster crawls, too.

Also, I noticed he tries to go for the treat from Katharine's hand a couple of times. He never does that to Greg or me. Something else to work on.
