I live in Hawaii (Oahu) and have been researching the various reptiles found on the island. Almost all reptiles here are "invasive" but they have established themselves. I have read many articles and documents that the Tokay gecko has been found through the years on various parts of Oahu, mainly Manoa. I know there are at least 8 types of geckos/lizards that are established here to include the Madagascar Giant Day gecko.
My question is, if I were to catch some Tokay's, would it be ok to keep them in an outdoor enclosure in my yard? I used to have a large enclosure for my Jackson Chameleon that would work well. I would take the mesh off and enclose it with plexiglass. I plan on leaving a couple sides open so the air will flow and the top would be half covered, allowing rain but still adequate shelter. Of course I would have plenty of shrubbery, hides, pvc pipe and more. I wouldn't be importing the Gecko or anything, just taking a wild caught Tokay and housing it. I know Hawaii has some crazy laws. The Jackson Chameleon is also an "invasive" species but people house and keep them lawfully.
Lastly, if it is "illegal" to keep Tokay's in my house, I could also catch a couple and release them in my yard. I have friends that see them on their homes. I live in Mililani Mauka and I know we have Jackson Chameleons and most likely Tokay's around. The climate is very humid, almost rainforest-like. The temps are usually 80-85 during the day and 65-75 at night. It rains daily, sometimes multiple times a day and their is plenty of basking sunlight. I don't want to mess up the ecosystem and would never do anything to cause harm to any animals, but I know this species is on island and established already.
One of my neighbors about 10 houses down caught a few Giant Day Geckos down the block and released them in his yard to take care of his roach problem. Another "invasive" species but still a species established in our area.
Any thoughts or advice is much appreciated!

Hello,
Most states do not have any restrictions on keeping invasive reptiles culled from the surrounding area. Only strict laws about releasing invasive captives into the wild. If you intend to keep it as a pet, than do not release it later.
Some states have a captive limit of lets say 3 to 6 native reptiles but most do not concern invasive reptiles.
Your outdoor enclosure should not allow too much air flow or direct sunlight that could artificially dry it out or bake it. Although Tokay will come out during the day upon occasion, they do not typically bask.
Tokay hail from the tropical Islands of Indonesia, Vietnam and other tropical rainforested countries. Your local weather should be perfect.
Tokay require good vertical hiding places in between slate, bark or other vertical nesting spaces like 1" cracks and crevices.
The other concern is coming up with enough insects since they will be limited to what might manage to crawl into the enclosure. You'll need to feed them often.
Frankly, If I had Tokay living in my neck of the forest, I'd want to catch and release a few around the house and provide inviting vertical nesting and hiding places to keep them happily around. Especially near an outdoor light that attracted lots of prey items at night. You'd get to see them often and not have to do any husbandry and feeding.
My winters are way too cold but I did build a pond that has brought in tree frogs, toads, skinks and a like for me to enjoy all summer long.

Good Morning,
Picked up a Tokay from my local pet shop over the weekend. It's in a temp tank at the moment while I construct him something more appropriate.
Currently he is in a 10g tank set up vertically (which I was putting together for tree frogs). Please take a look at the pic so you can see how big he is relative to his tank. For his size how large of a tank would be ideal?

Once you settle in, try to work on a 24" or taller glass enclosure. Or at least an interim unit that is at least twice as tall as he is long. Lean slate tile at an almost vertical angle against one side and then lean a piece of cork bark about an inch away from the slate to form a vertical 'hide' area that you can still see into from straight on.
I have several big Tokay that can be handled. So you never know, some will and some won't. Enjoy.

I think it looks pretty small.. You should give him as much space as you can, not as little space as you think he will be able to survive in. My tokay enclosure is 2 feet by 16 inches by 6 feet tall. A little more space than my geckos use, but a 10 gallon is very small and where's your heat source (or is the room heated?). Not trying to be too critical, but 10 gallons aren't big enough for many animals in my opinion! On the other hand, the gecko looks great. Gotta love tokays!

Thanks for the reply. I am moving in a couple of weeks and really want to hold off on building anything new until I see what my new reptile room will be like. I do love the attitude... it was worth $20 just to see him bite the lady at the pet shop lol 
I have no illusions of "taming" him, he will be at home with the other small lizards and frogs that don't get held.

Congrats on the Tokay. I love them. He looks fine for now. With mine I definitely noticed that they do better in larger cages. Have a pair in a 20gal and then a pair in 30gal. The pair in the 30 are growing faster, out in the open more, laying more eggs. So I will be moving the pair in the 20 into a larger tank soon.
Gotta love their attitude huh?! LOL my sister almost fell out of her chair laughing when I was doing a quick clean up in the 30 over the weekend.. I don't know how many times I was begging my boy not to bite me while trying to reach past him.

I have always LOVED tokays. Had a pair a few years ago.. but long story short some jerk has my entire past collection. I got lucky earlier this year and managed to find a group of breeding Tokays along with a lone rescue male. I took out one of the groups adult females and introduced her to my rescue male, Capt Jack. The group also came with nearly a dozen hatchlings, from fresh out the egg to several inches long. The girls have laid quite a few eggs, candling them shows nice little wiggly babies almost done developing. Cannot wait for them to hatch!!! Capt Jack started calling last week. LMAO if you have never heard it before will surely have you scratching your head for a bit trying to figure out what the noise is. So watching for eggs from them

nice pix I have tried twice with tokays and failed both times, they both died one never ate and lasted 4 months it was sad the other was young and ate like a champ and grew like crazy for a few months and then slowed down and evantually died. It was sad both times I really tried hard to if I ever try again it will be with a captive breed baby. the first was so skinny when I got it I knew it was a bad choice and did it anyway

Johor Baru: A man in his 40s was arrested for allegedly smuggling in five geckos worth RM100,000 at the Stulang Laut ferry terminal here on Sunday.
Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (Maqis) deputy director Siti Nur Ahmad said a joint raid was conducted by the agency and Customs Department on a ferry that arrived from Batam at 7pm.
"The suspect from Batam pretended to be carrying clothing in a box. However, a scan conducted at the jetty revealed five geckos weighing 1.5kg each kept in plastic bottles."
There were no permits for the reptiles. Siti Nur said the suspect may belong to a syndicate which sold the exotic animal in the black market.
The protected species, known locally as "tokek", had received a lot of publicity as researchers found its saliva may be used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
It is believed once a gecko reaches 350g, it produces an enzyme that could treat HIV. There are no conclusive results to back this.
Siti Nur said the latest case was the second committed by the same syndicate in the past year.
She said the seized geckos were healthy and would be sent to the Wildlife and National Parks Department.

The man, an Indonesian national, was detained at the Customs and Immigration checkpoint here at the Stulang Laut Ferry terminal at about 6.30pm on Sunday.
State Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (Maqis) deputy director Siti Nur Ahmad said initial investigations had found that the lizards were brought in through Batam, Indonesia and were hidden in five bottles that were stored inside a box.
“The suspect came into the country via a ferry on a visitor’s pass. An X-ray scanner spotted the smuggled reptiles when the man brought his luggage through the checkpoint,” she told a press conference yesterday.
She said further investigations revealed that the lizards were meant for sale here. A single lizard could be sold for as much as RM35,000 due to its supposedly medicinal properties.
“The lizards had to be seized as one needs to have permits to bring animals into the country,” Siti Nur said, adding that this was the first time someone had attempted to smuggle animals through the checkpoint here.
She said the man had since been released, and the lizards would be handed over to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks in accordance with the Wildlife Conservation Act.

I posted most of this to an older post asking about the Tokay's from NERDS. I figure I'll repeat it here since it seems relevant.

Actually, NERD sold the entire collection last year. I found this out when I tried to purchase some of his better morphs. The rumors suggest that up until then, they were snapping up most of the morphs for that breeding project.
The rumors also suggest that they were not having very good luck breeding which was blamed on plastic enclosures and poor ventilation. What I cannot seem to confirm is whether the collection stayed stateside, or went overseas.
There are a couple of small breeders working with granite, leucistic and various normals which can be found here on Kingsnake from time to time. Also, a few wild caught patternless olive greens, and a couple more common morphs show up as well.
My own Tokay project is just beginning with all wild caught animals which includes 6 patternless olive green pairs, 4 calico Pairs, 3 leucistic pairs, 2 pied pairs, 2 granite pairs, 1 super red pair and several mixed pairs with high reds, carmels, leucistics and normal pairs with yellow spots and normals with orange spots.
I'm working to prove out several genetic lines and this will take a couple of years I suspect. NERD worked their project for over 5 years to get to some of the great animals they had.
Only time will tell.

I have 2 tokay geckos, one has always been thin (Joker), has been dewormed, seemed fine, the other (Dalton) was almost fat when I got him, but hides all the time, I look under his "hide" to be sure he is alive, but really never see him! they were set up in super plush, mossy, homes, and one day a couple weeks ago Dalton was out of his hide and had lost a bunch of wt! I took a closer look at Joker, and hes thinner too!
changed the set up to bare min (separate cages as always)so I can keep an eye on how much they eat, ect, will get a wt on them and deworm tomorrow, temps have not changed, 85-87 day, 76 night, they are in my "tropical room" humidity is high, no problems shedding.
don't know that age of either (both rescues) they could just be getting old, but it worries me they both lost wt at the same time :{
will be seeing my herp vet friend this week and talk to him, but any other ideas welcome!

Jika nasib mujur, maka penjual bisa melepas tokek seberat lebih dari 3 ons atau 4 ons dengan harga Rp 100 juta. Harganya akan lebih mahal lagi jika sudah mencapai 1 kilogram dan dibeli langsung dari pembeli Korea, China, atau Malaysia. Harganya bisa lebih dari Rp 200 juta.
Tokek raksasa yang pernah ditemukan di pedalaman Kalimantan memiliki berat hingga 64 kilogram dan terjual dengan harga Rp 179 miliar, dibeli oleh pengusaha Korea melalui orang Malaysia.

Hey, I usually post on the boa, rainbow boa, and blood python forums, I mainly keep boas and pythons with just a few colubrids. Well yesterday at work my supervisor came up to me and said theres a big lizard on the said of our building by the door on the outside if I wanted to see it, well I live in south east Texas so I wasnt prepared to see a Tokay hanging out on the side of our aluminum building. Being a non native species, it must have had to of gotten away from someone, I felt its my responsibility as a responsible keeper/hobbyist to catch it and not let it just roam the North Houston area.
Give you guys a little background on the weather lately, its been in the 100s and yesterday we had a heat index of 110F, and this poor thing was on the metal building so it must have been even hotter. It was pretty easy to catch so I figured the heat and lower humidity it must be dehydrated and over heated so I put it in a small Rubbermaid and put it inside the office which is about 75F until I went home. Its about 8 or so, and does not have very noticeable pores on the V shape like males do so I assume its a female. When I got home I set up a cage for it.
This is how I set it up, its a 29g tall aquarium with over 75% of the screen covered by plastic to help hold in humidity, yes I know screens are horrible but its all I had as I wasnt expecting to be bringing home a new little pet. Coconut husk for a substrate, a shallow water dish about an inch deep, large/med half long hides set up vertical a small fake vine, the foam background from an exo terra cage on 1 side that goes about half way up, and a heating pad under the tank on one side of the cage.
After I set this up I persuaded the tokay into the cage with a small snake hook, I didnt want to pick it up as I didnt want to stress it even more, and sprayed the cage down heavily with the tokay in it to help get it hydrated, which it didnt move when I did that barely at all and stayed in the same spot till I went to sleep and turned real dark. This morning I went to spray it again which is was now on the fake vine. And darted between the log hides soon as I came near the cage and her color was lighter again (I was thrilled that it seemed to be doing better.)
My house is about 78-79F in the day time about mid wall and 73-74F at night, with the heating pad under the cage I assume this will be adequate, am I correct with this?
Does it sound like I have the cage set up properly? From what Ive read Im pretty sure I do but from keepers experience I feel is always better then something you just find on the internet.
Feeding how often do you feed these? I know it says a variety of insects, they listed several, and dust their food with a multi vitamin every other feeding but they all failed to mention how often to feed. Also do you recommend a multi vitamin, which I dont have, or would a calcium supplement work? I have this.
Any other tips or thoughts feel free to ask, and thanks in advance for answering some of my questions

I do not own a tokay but like them very much. My mother won't let me get one as a result of this ... incident.
I went to a pet store to look at the reptiles (come one, someone else must do this). The guy at the herp dep. was very nice and let me handle some of the reptiles. I held a golden gecko (same genus) from Vietnam and it started looking at my mom. I knew it was going to jump because my crested does the same thing, but it was too late it jumped about three feet onto my mom and started scrambling up her chest. She was very hysterical. No Gekko after that.

I don't know much about Tokays specifically, but if that had been a turtle, I would have suspected either egg impaction, substrate injestion, or a severe parasitic load. What was her substrate? How did she get water? Was she ever tested for parasites?

My tokay absolutly hates it. I dust every other feeding and when I do lately it never eats all of the crix. No powder every last one is hunted down. I have switched to large crix so it doesnt eat as many, I put in 8 with no powder and all gone Iput in 8 with powder and it takes two days to eat them all. It could also be that that the crix are much larger and it just doesnt need as many as before it was eating 10/15 a night. Crix are about 3/4 to 1 inch long and tokay is 8 inches long growth spurt has slowed down, not really getting chubby either. Thats about it for now still eating well and hiding all the time.

Doing some maintenece in the cage yesterday and normaly my tokay stays in the pvc pipe. I must of bumped the pipe or some thing because it shot out of the pipe at about a hundred mph jumped right out of the top of the cage, up the wall and behind my tv. When I went to grab it it jumped on my hand down my arm around me and jumped of my back somewere that I didnt see. Needless to say it took mee two hours to find it. It was hiding under the lip on the foot board of my bed. Still wasnt easy to catch. Back in cage now all is well I just hope this wont effect its great feeding habits. I didnt try to feed it last night thaught I would wait until tommorow and give it time for the stress to go away. Anybody else have expirience with escapies. Does there appetite go back to normal. Im sure im not the first one to have one get loose.

I wouldn't worry about it to much. Tokays are tough as nails, and born eating machines.

I bought a new tokay yesterday and it was purplish at the store with sky blue spots. Then when I got it home it was all sky blue, but today it's back to solid purple. I prefer the sky blue but they seem to be getting harder to find. Do they darken their shade with their mood or should I expect this guy to stay the purple color?
Any suggesions?

I have no real anser for you just glad to talk to somebody. I am new to tokays but I have read that mood, temp and time of day all come in to play when it comes to light or dark shade. I just dont know which is what. Hopefully someone chimes in and lets us both know. Is yours a wid caught or CB, how big , good appetite . You know small talk.

Its been almost a month now still doing great. Has to be a solid 8inches long now, plowing through a dozen crix almost every night. Still pretty shy probably always will be. Starting to plump back up again maybe its growth spurt is slowing down a bit to put on weight, and then shed again. small heat wave last week gave me a little scare,swiched to smaller blue bulb instead of red unpluged heat mat and temps were fine. Luckily I had a selection of random bulb sizes and colors from experementing before I got it. Thats it for now, I would love to here from someone else from any expirience level, even just a lurker that doesnt have any reps like I was not to long ago.

thats not what I meant at all. I clearly said that I was here to learn and I meant more experience than me, I reread my post and nothing there even remotly says that you dont know what you are talking about. as I said every thing ive read says feed them as much as thay want when thay are young, ive also read that they hatch out at 3 to 4 inched and if you read my other posts I got it at about 4 inches so I fed it and fed it some more and its grown rapidly. Ive read these forums for months alot of the different ones and finnaly have something to talk about practicaly by myself for a month and the only three responses I get are negative. Very discourageing I have said nothing rude and I am doing my best about spelling and puncuation along with the care for my tokey.

Are you implying I dont know what I am talking about? I mean it will eat 12 crickets a night if you let it but does that mean you should do that?

It is alot more food then I was expecting it to compared to what ive read, but everything ive read also says ofer as much food until it doesnt show interest anymore. As ive never seen it eat in front of me Iwas only putting 6 crix in and checking back shortly and thay were gone. Then I put 8 and same results and so on now its up to 12 and there all gone in the morning. All cix are dusted and its growing rapidly, I didnt think there was a problem with that if somebody with more experience thinks thats to much food I will switch to every other night. Thats what I am here for to learn from other people,I just dont want to slow down its growth 4 inches to 8 inches in 4 weeks I thought was great as I dont really know how old it is. please respond and let me know.

it shed last night on its 13th day with me. It seems to be alot bigger atleast 7 inches now, it seems to have slimmed down abit. It got chubby and then shed and seems long and skinny now, atleast from my observations from what little I see of it. I would amagin that it will repeat that process again. Still eating like a pig on dusted crix about 10 a night every night, gone through alot of crix in 2 weeks. Didnt quite expect it to eat that much but im glad it does. it seems to be darker now that it shed, dont really know what i was expecting colorwise. I read that temp has something to do with lite or dark, I was also wondering which end of the spectrum is it that mood plays. thats it for now thanks for reading.
