Boer goats are considered as the true meat-producing goat breed. The originated from South Africa and are brought into the US in the early 1900’s. Because of the high demand for it meat, many goat farms are deciding to raise goats for meat production and the breed of choice is the Boer goats.

Why Boer Goats?

Boers are adaptable, hardy and are very easy to take care and handle. You can settle for simple structures to provide shelter for your goats against the various elements. Raising Boer goats is real easy as they can comfortably live in the heat of the sun even at 90 to 100 degree temperatures. These breeds have darkly pigmented skin under a white fur that reduces risks of getting sun burned. Raising Boer goats also need not to be selective of housing or shelters during colder months because they can sleep outside even at 10 degrees only. Boer goats also are not very much interested with jumping over fences compared to dairy goats. They have a quieter temperament and any type of mesh fencing that is about 3 to 4 feet tall will confide Boers in.

The Demand for Goat Meats

Goat meat is being consumed by more than 80 percent of the world’s population. It has a lower fat content compared with beef or lamb. This is why goat meat popularity in the US has grown dramatically. One of the reasons for this may be the improved taste of Boer meat goats. Adding just about 50 percent of Boer bloodlines to other goat meat produces a mild, tender, light red meat which easily absorb any seasoning that cooks can try.

Raising Boer goats ensure you that your goats also have a rapid growth rate which makes it possible for kids to be ready for market sooner than the other breeds. Customers pay premium prices for young Boer goat meats because of their apparent tenderness and distinct flavor.

Starting to Raise Boer Goats

This is one step that overwhelms many potential goat farmers – how to get started. A herd of meat goats should include a Boer or a Boer cross buck and a lot of dairy, Spanish as well as mixed breed does that you intend to raise. Buying goat should be made from reputable breeders rather than picked out from stock yard auctions. A lot of farmers realize that the loss from animal diseases bought from stock yards are greater than the lowered prices of the animal bought. Then make sure that your Boer or Boer cross buck is ready. In some cases, bloodlines may not be important in the meat herd, however papers are important to ensure that you receive what you have paid for and that you keep a great resale value of your buck.

If you intend to raise just a few animals for breeding rather than have large herd, be sure to know the breeder that you will be buying your breeds from. Do not purchase stocks from some trucks that are just passing along. Have a pedigree certificate or pedigree application in with you when you are leaving your farm with your animal. In buying and raising Boer goats, farmers should also know more about programs for disease control and consciously check the status of the whole herd. Also ask breeder to show you related animals in their mature state and be sure to get a guarantee in your purchase in case the Boer you got is a non-breeder. Raising Boer goats is fun and they can be loving animals as well.

My first horse is Tunny. Last years, he was registered to take part in a horse race and he won the prize. He was very excellent. I always remind the time he run toward the target and the way he displayed.

The BLM is out to destroy the herd of Cloud Wild stallion of the Rockies. They intend to round up the herd by Helicopters and capture him and other "older" stallions as well as foals and mares. Then they will give birth control to the mares and geld many stallions.

Haven't posted here for a long while. If you live in the western portion of the US you have probably followed media coverage of the seizure of horses from Alliance NE. around the 21st of April, approximately 210 mustangs were seized from an operation that was represented to be a sanctuary for BLM mustangs and mustangs surrendered by others. In January of this year, there were said to be over 300 mustangs on the ranch, and between January and the middle of March, about 100 were starved. The survivors were emaciated, but due to heroic efforts of Jerry Finch of Habitat for Horses, HSUS, Morril County law enforcement and a dedicated force of volunteers, the survivors are recovering. I said "approximately 210" because there were about that number removed, however there have been several foals born, and many of the surviving mares are in various stages of gestation, having been in the company of stud horses who were allowed to breed without restriction.

If you know anyone who would like to adopt a mustang or three, can provide a sanctuary for some who may be unhandleable (but we're working on that) or know anyone who has the capacity to house several, you may wish to contact JFinch@habitatforhorses.org, or info@frontrangeequinerescue.org, where the adoption application and agreements are being processed. Do Haflingers mane colors change as they get a little older. My friend has one with a gray mane and tail, but I was told it was lighter when she got her. I am confused as to why it now looks gray. I don't have haflingers so I don't know. I can't find another one anywhere with a gray mane and tail.

I sure hope your horse is better. I live out in the boondocks so it takes a little bit for a vet to get to me. I keep Banamine on hand, it is a pain releiver and gives them relief within 30 minutes. It is injectable so you have to know how to give a shot to use it. It has been a life saver in cases of severe colic. Anyone who owns a horse should try and keep it on hand if at all possible.

Absolutely. I hope you did. If you get a chance, please write back and let us know how he's doing. When my horse has colicked, the vet tubes him and flushes him with mineral oil, but gives a pain reliever shot first.

He’s gone. I knew he was when mom told me how bad he was last week. She didn’t take any of my phone calls for the last two days because I know she didn’t want to tell me before I went to Mike’s wedding.

My horse is gone. He had been bad for a few weeks, eating sparingly, having trouble walking sometimes, and just generally not feeling well. Mom had the vet out to check on him last week when he was so bad. She said he was in pain and there was nothing she could do about it. That was enough for mom. She’s never allowed any of our pets to go through pain for any length of time if there was no cure. It’s better that way, but it still hurts that he’s gone.

He’s buried up at their cabin in Jasper now. When she finally got on the phone with me and told me today, I didn’t cry. I had already cried last Thursday night when I knew he was going to be put down. She never had to tell me. Tears are stinging my eyes now as I write this though. He was a wonderful horse. He was my best friend for fourteen years. He’d had a hard life, many people had abused and neglected him until he came to live with us.

When we first got him, we had to keep him in our yard out in Callaway because we weren’t cleared to take him on the base stables. Waking up every morning and being able to walk out into a yard where there was a horse grazing was the coolest thing to happen in my life at that point. I was so crazy over horses, always have been. He was a wonderful trail horse, even when he’d shy at the tiniest bit of grass.

He hated trotting. He hated it so much that he invented his own gait of a very slow rocking canter. He could turn on a dime, even to the point of turning into a cedar tree at a run, almost knocking me off in the branches. He loved the beach, hated the little waves at the shore, but when you prodded him out into the water he was like a dolphin. He loved swimming.

He loved harrassing Oliver, grabbing his tail when the cat would walk along the top of the electric fence. It would shock the crap out of both of them, but he thought it was funny.

He used to like dogs, until two of them attacked him in Orlando. He was always cautious of them after that. He loved racing around in the seven acres we had down there, chasing after the two older horses, nipping them, and generally harrassing them. He always seemed so young.

He loved riding in the trailer. If you left a trailer in the pasture, you couldn’t keep him from getting in it. Put a halter on him, walk him up to an open trailer, and tell him to "get in" and he would, without any prodding of any kind. He always wanted to go somewhere.

He didn’t care if I rode him western, English, bareback, or sidesaddle. I never even had to give him verbal cues, he always just knew how fast I wanted to go. He only ever ran away with me one time, and that was after I’d pissed him off. I made him walk fifty laps in the arena and he never ran away with me again.

He loved pretzels, canned peaches, bagels, alfalfa, doritoes, gum drops, and horse cookies. He was always there for me when I needed him. Always willing to listen to my problems while I scratched his head, back, butt, or belly. He was always good for the farrier, lifting each hoof as needed.

He loved children. I knew this the first time a two-year-old little girl ran and stood under him at the stable on base. He wouldn’t move a muscle, even with flies buzzing all around his legs. She stood under him for ten minutes or so, because her mother had no control over her, but Bagan wouldn’t have hurt her for the world.

My children loved him. Even Trevor wasn’t scared at all when I set him up on the saddle. They knew he loved them. They’re going to miss him too.

My heart’s breaking. I don’t even know when I’ll be able to walk back out to that empty barn. I still have some of his horsehairs.

I will never find another horse like him. He was truly a magnificent horse. If there is truly a heaven, I’m sure he’s running along the shoreline, chasing the birds, watching the dolphins playing in the surf, and letting the wind glide through his hair.

I miss you so much, Bagan.

Glad someone else finally posted. Thanks for the compliment. He's such a wonderful horse and has been for years. Currently, he's off his feed, but my mother took him back up with her to Georgia where she has some good vets and he can be around (within talking distance) other horses.

hi all! i'm new here, i live in northwest indiana. i like all types of horses. these forums look fun. i also have a few questions:

why are they called "downs"? like as in Churchill Downs? whats a downs? haha!

also, don't know if any of you are familier with the area i live in, but has anyone here ever heard of Lake Hill Downs, in Lake Hills, Indiana? its a big old now-abandoned barn up around here, was just wondering the history behind it as i tried googling it and found nothing, and no one around here seems to know anything about it.

I don't usually come on here, but I was wondering if anyone had any pictures of a mare's foaling cycle, just simple black and white. For some reason I just can't find one online. It's really frustrating. Not even one to look at. :P
