Well I do not think many or most do get real large. I have seen some that I feel sorry for, those photos of really skinny collareds ya see basking with red mites all over them. I always think, wow, they look sickly in the wild, .

But every so often ya find a few BIGGIES. Guess they have good genes, and eat well. Probably eat a lot of smaller lizards, and tons of bugs. I suppose it is just the same as with some tall or big people. Maybe the parents were larger , kids then are larger , then their kids,,, and you get some big lizards, :0) In any case they sure are COOL looking.

Let me know if you remember the guys name, who was vending. lol

Any reason why wild Collareds should get larger and heavier than CB?

Hey, no I would not leave it bare bottomed, lol. Just put sand in over the entire bottom but put large pile in one corner of damp sand. They will know what to do (hopefuly) lol

I usually incubate at about 84 degrees, some do higher but I like it there it's a good temp. As far as the vermiculite, I'm sorry I do not do any scientific method of measurement. I have been doing this so long I just wet the vermiculite and squeeze it out until it's not drippy, or until it sort of forms together. Then it's ready, hhahahaa. Then put the squeezed vermiculite into your container. OR>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Also over the past few years I just put collared eggs in a suspended type container with my leopard gecko eggs. They just sit on a rack with damp vermiculite under the rack. They hatch fine :0)

They look pretty close especially the one girl, i will take some pics today when i move them to the smaller tank.

Should i leave the rest of their lay tank bare bottom except the corner/side with damp sand?

What temp do you incubate them at and how damp should the vermiculite be?

Yes she can lay more eggs without mating again.

As far as the males and color, 2 things come to mind.... are they warm enough? Usually get darker when cooler than they were. Check your temps. And they coul;d be ready to shed, they get dark, look dirty- ish, then shed and WA - Lah light again :0)

Unfortunately the one egg i put in the incubator already went bad.
The male seemed interested in her soon after she laid but i don't think they mated, though i guess she could have stored sperm from an earlier mating?
The males are starting to settle down now and jump at the tops less, the one has put on a lot of weight too, but their heads remain a darker colour and they were yellow when i got them, they have 10% UVB tubes and regular basking bulbs, is it the lighting that is the problem or have they still not settled in yet?

Ahhh that stinks, but it happens, maybe her next clutch will be okay. Should lay in a bout 2 - 3 weeks again.

Wile I was out yesterday the larger female, the one in the first pics, laid her eggs, she had been digging the last few days and moved all he sand i piled at the one end of the tank, i put 2 bricks forming an L in one corner and filled it with sand then put a wider flat brick on top leaving one end open for her to dig under it but she did not use it at all, there was also a low hide which she did dig under and lay one egg but it was drier under it then i thought so not sure if it is still good but put in just damp vermiculite in the incubator at 84f. She laid the other 3 eggs on the hot end in the corner on a tile right near the light, one was broken and the other 2 cooked.

I was spraying the pile of sand and low hide on the cool end of the tank, but after digging threw it was still very dry so i will spray it more and hope the second female uses it.

And I am thinking of putting a small square container with a lid on it to help keep the sand damp at the hot end as well.

The female that laid looks good though, and was eating dusted superworms when i got home.

Hi, Be careful of the one that's getting the nose rub. That can get really bad if they continue to jump and smash that already raw nose. Put some neopsorin (without pain medicine) that can be harmful to lizards, so use the ORIGINAL only on it.

Sometimes changing the stuff around in the tank, makes them more observant, they seem to investigate the tank and all the stuff in different places. Takes their mind off jumping for awhile, lol. Just move things every couple days and see if it helps. Sounds crazy but does help.

I have never closed off the sides or put paper over them and I have had many wild caught through the years. They eventually stop (glass dancing) and if they jump up to the top , I never really worried my lights were on the outside and I figured they were safe they just needed to jump back down when they were ready.
When they get used to you , you can let them out and let them run a bit. Block off your tub drain and put a towel in the tub and let them run in there sometimes times. They are safe, they can not get out or get lost under anything. Sit down hang your arm in and let them get used to your hand. The tamer they get the more calm they become, the less jumping, and smashing into the glass they will do.

Thanks! I am using 10.0 tubes so glad they produce enough UVB for them.

I have only had them a little over a week so I think they were caught gravid, they did not eat the first few days but are packing away the food now, and I am dusting with calcium and multi vitamins of course. I have tried giving them a light spray to get them to drink but they don't drink or lick it off the rocks/glass, they have a water bowl and i have seen the real gravid female soaking so i hope they are hydrated enough.

The males though are still high strung even though they have plenty of bricks, low hides, logs etc and the sides covered in black paper they still leap up at the top screen/lights a lot, and one now is starting to get nose rub it looks like, is there anything else i can do to help them acclimate?

I use the tubes/flouresant bulbs 10.0 reptisun or repti-glo

I used to use to use the Mercury Vapor bulbs until I fried our circuit box, just was too much heat I was using for that room. Anyway My reptile room is now on a separate circuit but I still do not use the Mercury Vapors, They just see to get so freakin hot, I do not like them. When You have to run a lot of heat lamps they just scare me.

Anyway yea your girls both look gravid. Best wishes with them, hope to see some lil ones soon :0)

Seems to be, she's go the gravid blush colors, and wide through the middle.

She seems to have a really thin tail and boney hip area/ tail base. Was she thin before becoming gravid?

Both females look gravid but especially the first one, caught her soaking in the water dish today and she is not very active, but looks like there was a lot of digging going on this morning.
All the females ate today but the males still aren't very interested in food, and the males still jump at the tops of the tanks trying to escape, 3 sides are covered in black paper, how does it usually take for them to acclimate?
And Eve do you use MVB bulbs or tubes for UVB for them?

I have know n Paul for many years, he's a good guy! I got my first chuckwalla a zillion years ago from Paul :0) lol.

Your kids will be all grown up before you know it. They will be having their own lil kids. I wish you all the best with them.

Holy cow what a beast!!! Yea paul sent me what he says are 2 females. Not sure if you remember me emailing you about how someone sent me a trio I had problems sexing. We decided it was 2 definite males and 1 you were pretty confident was female. I gave 1 male to a friend so now I'm left with 1 young adult male and 1 young adult female. Hi, what sex are the babies and what sex are the adults you want to eventually put them with? That's important.

I put youngsters 4 months, or older in with adult females only. If your adults are male and female then the male can start mating them ( the youngsters) at a very early age, it is not healthy for a female to mate so young. You can run into egg binding and other stuff if they breed to young. I usually let my young females mate at about a year old. Males and females can begin mating as early as 8 months old. I have had some males get sexy even earlier.

So depending on what sex you kids are and adults will determine when or if they can be put together. If one of your adults is male and any of your babys are male then you do not want to mix the males ever.

Your kids should grow quite fast if well heated and fed. All grow at different rates, males may be larger and longer females broader or chunkier, shorter. They will shed very frequently as they are growing. Let them eat as much as they want, I feed my youngsters everyday.

As far as maturity many people do not know that even though at a year old your collared is a good size, or normal 12 inches or so with tail, they do not fully mature until 3 to 5 years, I'm not saying they continue to grow enormous, lol, but they can continue to color up, and change up till that time.

I had a big guy that was given to me by a good friend, he was an aquaflame wild caught, he was huge at 17 inches, the sweetest dude, I loved him and miss him always he was famous around here, lol, his name was KONG

Hi Eve, thanks for the warm welcome. I wil get pictures uploaded as soon as I figure out how to upload them lol. I'm actually having a wee problem with my first set of eggs I got on Friday night. One of my girls layed 7, first clutch as well! Problem is the eggs are denting slightly. I have them in a SIM and I'm using perlite as well as allbeyreptiles water to perlite ratio. Panicking as I may loose them....Ahhh

Hi Kevin. I am also new to this site so "hi". Just like to say I have really enjoyed reading through the posts and checking out everyone's collections. I'm based in Scotland and have a trio of eastern females and a male eastern/western cross. My females are at the moment gravid so i'm expecting some babies (fingers crossed) In the process of creating an incubator for these so if all goes well I will post some pics.Looking forward to becoming part of the cimmunity

Nice to hear from you buddy! So happy to hear your little girl is still doing well.

I had to slow up a bit , limited space, I have so many lizards/ leopard geckos. I still need to home many gorgeous geckos. My husband is adding an addition in 2017 to the back of our home, a sunroom or reptile sunroom, lol for me. Should be FUN !

Anyway I also just moved to a new web provider and redid my site from blank pages so I could do it my way again, lol, it's a bit more refined, but same pretty lizards and geckos decorate it, :0) So if you ever need anything send me a message from there. I probably will have some collared kids this coming season.

So what all do you have now? I will stop back and talk again, maybe we can get this forum rockin, hahahhahaa LOL.

Hey buddy, so happy to hear your little female is still doing good. :0) Yeah last season I did not breed, I enjoyed the bunch just all to myself, lol. I may have some kids this season though.
I slowed up some the past couple seasons as I have been pretty much at my limits as far as space. I have many lizards, leopard geckos , still need to home some geckos before breeding anymore of them too. Next year 2017 my husband is putting on an addition/ sunroom or reptile room to the back of our home, so that should be pretty cool, and give me tons of space to play, hahahaaha.

I just redid my site from blank pages, mostly the same, somewhat more refined, lol, but same pretty lizards, and more geckos too. So if ya need anything, leave me a message Tony !

Are you planning for anymore ECs this year? I checked on your website a few time this past year but didn't see anything avail. Mine are still doing well, including the little female I got from you. Unfortunately, it was a very dull year for breeding. My sole male is also really getting up there in years.

No matter what, thank you for always checking in on this site and helping people with their collards! I may not post often but I do check to make sure we still have a life-line with you for our babies.

A follow up question. My terrarium is glass, and it has a haze to it. Is there a product that will clean that up? Jewelers rouge? Headlight lens cleaner? I want to be able to see my new pet!
