Which varieties of the So. Cal HL's are live bearing? I saw a really fat one in my yard in Joshua Tree and wanted to be aware of some tiny ones that might appear. And what variety is in my area? It's only the 2nd one I have ever seen here in the last 10 years and now 2 in the same month.

Hey everyone, my HL's are warmed up to me and today the shyer one was standing on its hind legs against the glass as many lizards do. I noticed it didn't have a speckled belly like my other one does. I had thought both were desert horned lizards and they look very similar in color and pattern on the top. The one that doesn't have a speckled belly also buries itself during the middle of the day while the more courages one stays on the surface pretty much all the time and has only buried itself once. So my question is could I possibly have two different species or do some DHL's have spotted bellies while others don't? I guess it doesn't make that much of a difference but I wouldn't expect to be sold two different species that are the same age, color, and size at the same time. I would really appreciate anyone's input. Thank you!

Hey everyone, I've had two juvenile horned lizards that I have I.D.'d to be phrynosoma platyrhinos (as the seller did not know the exact species) for about a week and I am now realizing how expensive the harvester ants are adding up to be. I would just raise them if I could get a queen but I live in MO and queens are not sold, so I am curious as to whether there are any ants that could serve as an alternative instead of harvester ants. This was not an impulse buy and I had already done plenty of research, I was just wondering because it could really save me some money to raise a species of ant I can get ahold of. Any info would be appreciated, thanks!

I've decided I will still buy harvester ants from time to time but I will mainly feed them carpenter ants as I read about someone who was doing that and the HL's were fine. Please let me know another ant would work better or if this is fine. Thank you in advance.

spendy for sure, if people keep paying 600 to 800 for them, they will keep asking it......silly.........i sent a few emails for the ones this summer that were listed on here, and was told "make us an offer"...and their add said, "hurry, these will go fast".......but the add was up all summer....lol.....reasonable would be ok, but those prices are way too high....

85 is best, 90 max, they are just not used to the heat, and will thrive much better in cooler temps..............

Well, my wife has wanted one since we really started getting into reptiles. I put her off because I had a pretty good idea of how much work would be involved. It also helped that they're not everywhere in the pet trade.

Well, a week ago at a local reptile show, she found one. Two really, but I let her convince me to get one of them. Looks to be a male Desert from what I've been told.

Fed him some crickets the first few days while we waited on ants to come in. Got an order placed with a decent supplier and he loves 'em!

Figured I'd join the club here. Anyone have any good advice? We've got good temps setup, uvb bulb, hide, rocks, etc. Wondering if I should dust the ants and if so how often? Calcium and/or multivitamin?

I would not recommend keeping any horned lizard as a pet without extensive research and even then it usually is not enough. Here is a link to the most helpful resource available.

Hello all, thought I'd share a link to some DHL pics I got last Friday out here in the Mojave Desert. The day was pretty productive, we found 7 Desert Horned Lizards, over 30 Mojave fringe-toed Lizards, 8 Desert Iguanas, 2 Zebra-tail Lizards, and 5 Side-blotched Lizards. Things are really warm and going strong now, so get out if you get a chance and enjoy the herps!

I recently got a THL who has been a complete joy. She has been eating regularly up until around the end of September. I figured she was trying to empty her stomach to begin hibernating since she began to stay buried longer.

Through out the process she would go down for a week and then come up for a day or two, then repeat. I figured this was ok since she was probably just trying to find warmer spots in the tank and would probably do the same in the wild?

So to make a long story short she has come up now and is regularly coming out every day. The temps in the low are around ~60 (which I know isn't that cold) and the highs are around ~74. With winter still here I know the temps are going to drop down again below 60s and I can keep her cage warm or just let her be and hopefully she will dig herself in the ground.

My concerns is the inconstant temperature might be unhealthy for her. Any suggestions? Warm her up and let her get back to a normal schedule or just keep the lights off and let her do her thing?

PS: She is still fat and healthy looking, just don't want to be starving the poor girl if she is ready to get up.

Maybe she needs the formic acid normally obtained from eating ants. Try some store bought vinegar. A few drops on mouth area 2x weekly. mike

Hello, We purchased two of these guys at the begining of the year. We were told they were a couple and the gentleman told us one was the male and the other the female. Unfortunately the female has since passed. We are interested in purchasing another so our little guy is not lonely however we want to be sure that he is infact a male and if it is best to get another female of if two males can live in the same habitat? These guys are doing great outdoors, with the aid of heat lamps for night time and a day heat spot. They live with two chucks, two collards; one 1/2 Dickersone and one Vestigium girl, a spiney and a southern alligator lizard, I know, quite a mix, but, they are all well fed and get along great in the large cage.

Hello, We purchased a pair of horned lizards back in April. The male was the smaller and the female was quite big. Both have had good appetites and we have been feeding them the harvester ants as well as small crickets. As of the last two weeks our female looks very small and week she has not burried herself in the last 2 weeks either. She has eaten up until the last two days but did not the last feedings. We mist them and keep there aquarium at the correct temps. If anyone has any input it would be greatly appreciated. We really love this little couple and do not want to loose her. Horned lizards, are a little odd in that, certain things can cause them to lock up. Misting is usually not needed, a slight drip on the snout, now and then, if they are acceptable of it, is good, and can help hydrate them.Some moisture in the sand, some, can keep the humidity up, for what they need. Try changing up the food , offer her a grasshopper, take off the back legs first.Also, other things like shedding can cause them discomfort, and cause them to act weird, not eat,not bury for a day or two. Sometimes there's nothing one can do, something causes them to "flip a switch" internally, and they won't eat and they meet their demise. Its not a good thing, none of us like to see it. Usually a changeup in food, something different can help pull them out of it. Parasites are another possible cause of "withdrawal" not feeling well, dehydration, etc....even fruit flys sometimes can pull them out of it, or a moth....try a few things....no lightening bugs.......

I have an infestation problem with Harvester Ants (100% positive they're Harvesters) and was thinking a Horned Lizard may be a good natural way to control the ants. These are very large ant colony's so a healthy food supply is not an issue.

I was wondering what experienced HL owners thought of the idea of getting a couple of HLs to turn loose in the wild for this purpose. And what issues might I need to be aware of; such as types of protection from natural predators would they need? And if I got more than one are they territorial and will they drive each other away or are breeding pairs available? I'm in Southern Colorado, if that's an issue.

Pretty much out of these guys right now. Still have plans to go on with the next phase of my ant-less diet experiment...just don't have the time to properly work with them right now. Maybe next year? Is anyone seriously working with them in this way?

BTW.....the last of my 2005 CB Solares, a male, is now 6, fat and healthy and has yet to see any ants besides the Argentines that occasionally sneak into his enclosure.

I know this is sacriligious talk in this forum that will most likely be followed by darts and arrows, always has in the past...but still, I have real data that indicates further work in this area is worth investigating, and just imagine what we could do for these guys should we figure out a more economically friendly way to raise them.

Hi, Roger. I realize this is a little late, are you still working on this experiment? I'm really interested in it as it is not very practical for me to order harvester ants all the time. I have not had my DHL's for very long (just a little over a week) and would be interested to try this out after I get into these animals a little bit more and can say I have some experience with them.

Different ants eat different food items. The one thing you can easily do for them is give them something to drink.
I like apple juice or a slice of apple that they suck the juice from. This ensures that they are well hydrated, and likely provides several benefits to horned lizards.

I love horned lizards, but since they seem to do horribly in captivity I got this instead:

I fill my love by finding them in the field. I found 30ish last year (photo'd 25 or so). Here's the first one from this year:

in theory, we get modestum too (I'm in the panhandle) but I've never found one, nor do I know anyone in the panhandle that's found one here.

Nice P.cornutum. Must be nice to see so many. There are a few locals in AZ where these guys are quite abundant.
They are difficult in captivity, but they can do well if you put the time and learning into their care.
Regarding modestum, my experience is that they will tend to be at and slightly up the bases of the hills surrounding valleys where you might find cornutum. They love to bask on rocks in the morning sun.
