We have a young B&W Columbian that has very suddenly become visibly ill. He is rolling his head spasticly and seems to have very limited use of his front legs and feet. He's repeatedly sticking his tongue out in a very abnormal way. Our exotic vet is closed for the day and I'm not expecting him to live through the night which is breaking our hearts.

I'm not expecting a miracle cure, but if anyone has any suggestions please don't hesitate. I'm more curious if this sounds like anything any of you have seen. I'm hoping that we can learn from whatever mistake we must have made

He has constant fresh water, eats 2-3 times a week rotating between pinkies and lightly cooked ground turkey with a broad vitamin supplement that we cook into it at the proportions the label suggests.

Any thoughts would be helpful.

So I fed my yearling All American Venom a nice fuzzy today. and after that he pooped in his tub and then tried to eat it so I had to tell him no and put him back in his cage.

It sort of worried me.

That's pretty normal behavior for some lizards. Babies often eat adult poop to get their gut right. In other words, they need good bacteria in their digestive tract for a healthy gut. Doug Dix, a breeder of uromastyx lizards among others, once told me that he tries to make sure all his babies eat some poop from their mom to promote healthy gut function.

This is another reason why w/c lizards can be trouble. Some have bad bugs in their guts that can be transferred to an otherwise healthy colony.

Here is the outdoor enclosure for my tegus. About 90% of the cage is from things that were lying around the yard. It is a 6ft x 6ft x 6ft.
This was a place that the previous house owners used for just throwing yard items. I cleared it all out added 3 ft of soil to cover the cement floor, bolted a 6x6 section of dog run fencing to the opening in front and left the top open. I used an old 5ft cooler without a lid for a water dish and added rocks into it to raise the flooring of the water dish to make it easy for the lizards to get in and out. I used an old 5 ft watering trough and laid it on its side to act as a large hide and used an old gardening box to create a hide for the female to nest. I cut holes large enough for only the female and added a sand/soil mix into the box. I took apart the tegus old indoor cage and used the duel light fixture and mounted it above the metal hide to provide a basking spot during colder times and wired in a pond pump and filter for the water dish. Finally I ran PVC piping from the top of the cage with a on off valve and capped it off with an adjustable sprinkler head. I added a palm tree, some branches and rocks. I access the enclosure from above.

Hello! I'm considering getting an Argentine tegu. My apartment has a big closet which I intend to clean out and set up as a giant enclosure. I work most days 2-9 and I was considering letting him wander the house during the mornings when I'm home and only having him retire to his cage when I'm working. Do they do well with free-roaming? I'd like to take him out for car rides too and let him wander around in a pen in my backyard.

With my Argentine Black and White Tegus being the first reptiles to get me into the reptile world I figured it was only right for them to also to be the first for me to pay tribute to. I have postponed getting my first tattoo for many years now due to being so picky about the artwork. I have struggled to get the detailing I desired seeing that I own the real thing. I am glad to say that after working with an artist, my sister found, the first of 3 sessions has been completed. For my first tattoo it was a 3.5 hour session with one half hour break for lunch and a half hour setup/preparation period. I personally am happy with the results thus far and am looking forward to the final result in a few months.

I work in a pet store and still have a couple young golden tegus. They were originally housed together with no problems, and then I separated them because I noticed their feet (one of the tegus especially) were really mangled. Looked as though they fought. Since then, I've been treating the feet the best I could with Betadine, Veterycin, etc. Some toes were lost on both animals and overall not very nice looking feet anymore.

My problem now seems to be shedding on the toes. I've been letting the tegus soak in a bath to loosen skin on their toes, and in their cages, I have provided a humid hide to each of them. I am concerned that more toes will be lost and more injuries to the feet and toes will occur. I've noticed small wounds like cuts on their toes and feet as well. Like I said, they are now housed separetely, so there is no danger of fighting.

I want to try to get these guys feet at least healed up and keep them problem free for good. Obviously, the feet won't be anywhere near perfect, but I would prefer that the animals are not suffering from sore feet all the time.

Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

I am looking for breeders of blue tegus whom may be expecting to get babies this year so I can get a pair or a 1:2 group of baby blues. I have an entire room of reptiles and have done extensive reading on tegus over the past 7 years. I currently have a pair of the Black and white tegus and they are my “puppies”. My male is even being used in a few weeks by my vet for some Animal Hospital Event they are putting on the 6th of May. I have had their old 8ft cage, I built years ago, just sitting empty acting as a cage stand so I have the cages needed just need the babies. So if you are a breeder of blue tegus please send a shout out my way.

I'm in the process of building a 3 unit cage. My question is, if I build this cage at 5 feet long by 3 feet deep, would that be alright for the tegu? It'd be a foot shorter than the recommended dimensions but I plan on letting the tegu roam my room pretty often (with supervision of course.)

If you guys think that sounds like a bad idea I'll see what I can do, but I'd like to keep this at 5 feet.

So long story short, I am in vet school and decided this winter break I would travel to Nicaragua and head a veterinary mission on the island of Ometepe. It is in desperate need for medicines and sterilizations, and there is also some great herping/birding to be done down that ways, so it was a double whammy of awesome for me. Tragically, I received an email from my petsitter that said my thermostat malfunctioned and basically for 24 hours the hot air was blasting into my trailer at full force. My red tail boa who was 7 years old, both my young red tegus, and my african grey parrot who I have had since I was 15 all perished from heat exhaustion. Only my ball python survived in his water dish (which was near boiling temperature when checked by the pet sitter). It was a heartbreaking end to a spectacular trip. As I come back to put my life back together, I know I am no where near replacing my parrot. I do, however, want to replace my tegus. I just recently built an 8 ft x 4 ft x 4 ft cage specifically for my two red brothers. They were in large bins almost ready to transition to the large cage. At this point, I would really just like to obtain a large male tegu (either black and white or red) to put into the large cage but it seems hard to find any available from the limited classified ad system out there for these guys. I have tried some on Fauna and here on Kingsnake, tegu talk, and thetegu. Any other leads? I feel like I need to keep this hobby going to help me clear my mind of the deaths of all my babies. Any help is appreciated, I realize I am asking for a very specific thing.

Wow, that is such a horrible thing to have happen!

All I can suggest is to keep watching classifieds. Many tegus are down for the winter, so there is not much activity on the tegu market until they awaken. You can also check your local Craig's List.

Hello everyone,

I am new to the tegu forum, but I need some input. I work in a pet store and we have a pair of Golden Tegus, and they eat well, and are quite active. However, they both seem to almost gasp sometimes and it looks like it has to do with something respiratory. I've been doing some reading and I do know that they require high humidity that should be monitored closely. I think I may need to boost the humidity levels a bit, is there anything else anyone can think of??? Any input and advise would be awsome.

as you mentioned humidity is important try to keep it around 50 to 75 percent but make sure heat is also correct try to keep the cool side at about 78 to 82 degrees the hot side between 88 and 95 and the basking spot between 100 to 130 degrees make sure there is seperate areas of temp so the tegu can get hotter or colder depending on how he feels.

If it is respiratory, then high humidity and low temps would not be helpful. Keep them at 75-80 cool end, 90 warm end with a basking temp of 105-110. Nightime drop of 70. Then get the humidity at 70%. Antibiotics may be in order as well as a trip to the vet.

It really could be a lot of things, you would have to be more specific. How often are they gasping, and what kind of sounds do they make, if any? Does it happen in a particular area of the cage or at a certain time of the day? Or is it completely random? They both could be thermoregulating, choking on something (doubtful), or have a mild respiratory infection. It could be numerous things, or nothing at all. Be a little more specific on here and I/we can see what we can gather in terms of information. But in the end, if you are worried about anything healthwise your best bet is to get one of them checked by a reptile minded veterinarian.

Ok so technically there are three species of Tupinambis (tegus) in the American reptile trade. T. Teguixin (Columbians), T. Rufescens (red tegu), T. Marianae (Argentine black and white, extreme giant, Chacoan giant, blue...).

There are plenty of people who love their columbians. Just like there are plenty of people that love their Varanids (monitor lizards). What are you looking to get out of your captives? What do you consider success? Are Columbians aggressive or are they being defensive? Do your research and know what your getting into.

If you want something that curls up to you and loves you get a dog.

I would DEFINITELY opt for a blue over a columbian, ANY day. ANY tegu but a columbian...they have a very deserved reputation for being very difficult, aggressive pets. Of course, there are people who have had occasional successes--but, they are few and far between. A red, a blue, and argentine b/w, an extreme giant...all good choices.

Getting a columbian would be nothing like having one of the others I mentioned--two totally different worlds.

I like the break. It goes right along with my snowboard season. If you want a tegu that doesn't brumate or just one that doesn't go out so hard, look into columbians or blues as opposed to the Argentinian alternatives.

Well, it's a matter of perspective. When you factor in the cost of food and power (and quality bulbs/substrate, etc...), a lot of people like the 3-5 month break they get. I totally understand where you're coming from--for me, the benefits of having the animals outweighed the costs of maintaining them. But, they are SUCH great animals, that even though they hibernate, they are TOTALLY worth it. I've kept just about every type of reptile imaginable in 20 years and tegus are, without question, HANDS-DOWN, the greatest, most redeeming reptile I've owned. I certainly would NEVER let the fact that they hibernate come between me owning one. Why have an animal that's half-as cool all of the time when you could have an animal that's twice as cool 75% of the time (or potentially more)?

Not really. Tegus are VERY DIFFERENT than most reptiles, in that if they want to hibernate, they are going to hibernate--regardless of temperature or light manipulation. I've had MVB lighting at 100 degrees and had tegus hibernate. In my experience, in a tegu's first year, you CAN have some success and preventing or shortening hibernation, but there are no guarantees. Tegus that have been hibernated in the past seem more apt to continue that practice.
