With the ban on imports it seems that we are quickly loosing the natural look of the reticulated python over the desire to produce odd looking snakes. Its almost impossible to find a yellow headed retic. To each his own, but most of these morph projects to me look silly. Am I alone?

Hope this forum is still alive. I recently purchased 2 super dwarf retics planning to breed them. I more or less understand how the percentages of each come into play to the percentage of the young. The male is a 50% SD from bob clark and the female is 37.5% SD,and 12.5% Dwarf from vital exotics. My question is what percentage SD would the young be and how do you get that number? any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks

You probably already found the answer somewhere else in the last 2 and a half months, but the equation for SD/Dwarf is you add the percentages of the parents together and divide by 2. So based on that pairing the offspring would be 43.75% SD and 6.25% Dwarf.

Quick question, I recently purchased a female albino retic. I want her to grow fast and large but not fast enough to make her obese and decrease her longevity. Possibly breeding her in the future but for now she's the only snake I have and a family pet.
I have kept reptiles off and on for 20 years so I can give her good care, whatever she needs when she needs it. That's why I got her. I'm going to have a couple of fantastic animals. I love large snakes. (Let me know if anyone in illinois has a female green conda) 
But, I don't want to grow her too fast so that she may have intestinal problems or what not.
In the past I fed until the bump was gone and not so much that when theyre coiled their scales crease. I can definitely spot an obese snake. I'm probably fine but I thought i'd get a second opinion.
Also these forums are dead, let's liven this place up. I know there's hundreds of thousand retic owners, whys the last post like a month ago? Is there a better retic forum around?

What is her current size? Younger animals tend to get more frequent feedings, about every 4-6 days. As they get more size and meals get bigger the feedings get spaced out a bit more. There are a lot of factors that go into each snake, so it is not a one size fits all proposition. Just keep an eye on the growth realizing that young snakes get longer before they fill out. There are a lot of overweight snakes out there.

Hey all, I'm a first time retic owner, with a juvenille purple albino female. She's currently being treated for mites and a head scab, but tonight I noticed not what I would call wheezing, but but sounds like a whistling upon her exhaling. Having never owned a retic and never experienced this with any of my snakes previously, I was just wondering if anybody had any insight on what it might possibly be, hopefully not a URI.

You can increase humidity by putting aluminum foil on half the screen top. And have a big flat pan of water, and daily misting with a spray bottle.

Woops, I forgot the original reason I wanted to reply to this.
As an alternative to your glass on top of the cage I might suggest what I did. Duct tape. I used a black variety. It covers super tight if you overlap about a mm. I covered probably 90% of my top and only left open the areas where my light and ceramic heater are. I have a good 70-80% humidity.

I also have a small retic in a 40 gallion and i'm using a similar setup as you are.
Under tank heating pad under about 1/4 of it, one 40 watt party bulb in red for night light and one 60 watt ceramic all on the heat end.
What I did is build a shelf on the heating pad end.4 pieces of wood, 2 sides, one shelf on top and one in the center. So 3 levels for my girl to choose from at varying temperatures. I also use small towls on that enter under the shelf with her water bowl on top of 1/4 of the heating pad so humidity can rise and daily I will spill her water when i change it. So the small towl will hold moisture and help humidify the enclosure.
Just my temp setup until I can build her something in the next few months that will last a few years.
Just be sure to get her a nice *cozy* spot thats 90 or so. If she's stressed she may pick a dark cold spot and you cant have that with a possible URI and mite stress.

Sarge is correct.
With glass cages, it is best to cover the top. I would go even farther than 1/2, more like 3/4. Then use undertank heat on a controller or use your ceramic emitter or radiant heat panel.
Too much ventilation is often the culprit, especially in Winter. In Summer, ventilation is usually no big deal.
The little 5 gal tank I have here - see how much of the screen is covered? In Winter, I even put a strip of foam in that open space. And this is for a colubrid.

So it sounds like we're pretty similar in heat and humidity, that sounds like a load off my mind, haha. Her bowel movements are a little irregular so I was hoping to get the head up and see if that helps. Thanks for your help!

You have the humidity covered and that is good. I understand what you are doing as I used glass tanks years ago and they are hard to heat and keep humidity. I keep all of my snakes in Herpcages except the largest ones are in Vision cages. I use a single Exoterra Heat Wave pad on a rheostat to provide a hot area of 88-90 degrees that covers a 25 percent end area of the cage floor. At the cool end of the cags the temp is around 71 degrees which is the ambient room temp. Except for basking on the heat to digest a meal, most of my snakes stay in the cool zone. Bill

She's in a 40 gallon glass with a screen top that's half covered by glass to help hold humidity. The humidity is usually somewhere around 65-75% on the cool side of her tank. I do know that the heat emitters/bulbs can dry out quickly, but I don't really know any other ways to keep the heat up. It's already only about 76 ambient with a hot spot of 85ish so I'm looking to take it up. How do you get the temps you need with just UTH/How many do you use? Thanks

In my reply to your post in the Herp Health Forum I didn't mention humidity. Lack of proper humidity can cause an URI with retics along with horrible sheds. What type of cage are you using? Heat emitters and heat lamps are great at drying out humidity rather quickly. The only heating devics I use with any of my constrictors is under cage heat. Bill

Any recommendations on pumping up the temperature? She's got a nice hotspot to warm herself on but the gradient is usually about 76. I run a 100 watt heat emitter, and a 40 gallon heat pad at all times and a 40 watt day light during the day. Any thoughts? Thanks

I recently acquired a pair of Kalatoa retics. They are wild caught imports, I normally never buy anything wild caught but went against my gut and bought these. I have had wild caught in the past and have been very successful with taming them and having them become good eaters. The female I got is great, good Eater(not in front of me) but a very good Eater and has actually calmed down and rarely strikes. The male who is roughly 5 feet hasn't settled in at all. He is by far the most aggressive retic I have ever had. It's really disappointing bc I love my snakes. I am looking for some advice on helping this guy settle in. I have had him for 3 months and he has not eaten yet. Any advice I have tried lots of things to help him. This is the just the first time I have not been able to get a retic to eat or somewhat calm down. I'm all ears if anyone has any Advice let me know thanks

I have two anthrax females that are siblings and both appear to be transforming into calicos. I have one other anthrax female,actually an anthrax tiger that is the only anthrax female left out of the clutch that has not yet began to transform. I believe that it is close to 15yrs. ago that Nerd bred their "Anthrax" male to a beautiful female calico called "Poison Ivy" and produced the first of two clutches of what became known as granitebacks. "Poison Ivy" is the great grandmother to all my anthrax. A gb male from her 2nd clutch is the grandfather to all my anthrax and all their siblings. The anthrax tiger female has ,as yet, not begun any out of the ordinary color or pattern changes. Whether she will begin her calico metamorphosis like her sisters have or just be a carrier of the calico genes is not known at this time but it definitely is not random chance that two anthrax females would start the color and pattern changes with which they will eventually transform into the first full blown Anthrax Calicos ever recorded. NERD's Calico Tiger is likely the only other double morph calico in existence. The fact that two sibling anthrax sisters are transforming into calicos may indicate the possibility of an actual calico gene that can be passed on and expressed in the anthrax mutation. This could end up being a big event in the world of retic morph breeding because it may be the beginning of calico production on demand, something that until now has seemed just another unattainable "holy grail". The value of the calico will likely skyrocket as well as the vessel of it's expression-the Anthrax mutation, because for the first time the Calico mutation will be produced by choice and not only by random chance.
Due to age and health limitations I may not be able to pursue this project to it's completion and because of this I have several animals available including the Anthrax Tiger female, graniteback tiger pairs, graniteback supertiger male, and the original gb tiger adult parents. I had planned to post photos of everything, including the anthrax calicos but I 'm unfamiliar with the procedure involved and will have to email photos to those interested. As some of you are aware the government is trying to add retics, and the other 3 species of anaconda to the Lacey act. There is a petition to stop this(I will add the link to at the bottom). We've got less than a month to get another 99,000 signatures. So we need everyone and their entire families to sign. We need to stop this NOW, they arnt stopping here, the boa constrictor complex is next; and who knows where this will end. Those of you without any giants, please don't feel indifferent about this. You are going to need the same support when your animals end up on the chopping block. The reptile community hasn't had the best history of coming togather, and we need to change this before the only reptile industry is an underground one. I'm not trying to be an ass but I've read through some of the posts on the http://www.regulations.gov site and most of what is there doesn't put us in the best light.
Please check your spelling. We don't want to sound like a bunch of kids (my apologies to the kids who can spell) or slacker adults living at home in their parent's basement. Pay attention to the proper usage of the following words: your, you're, there, their, they're, though, through, and thorough. Avoid excesses of passion, particularly anger, in your testimony. Keep it simple and factual. Don't shout at them. Show them the value of these animals to you as a pet owner.
Also please remember that this is an all or nothing issue. Don't say things like, "ban the big snakes but not my little boa" or "I understand why people don't like nasty Retics but boas are cool." This issue doesn't allow for compromise - it is winner take all. PETA, HSUS, and Fish & Wildlife want ALL large snakes banned period and they've worked hard to get it to this point. They will not give up easily so please don't say anything that adds fuel to their fire.
If you don't think this affects you if this law passes, it is a simple step to begin the process of outlawing Tegus, Monitors, and Iguanas which are also now a part of the Florida ecosystem so please get involved.

i would feed your baby retic two small rats or rat fuzzies a week , they have more calories and fat my females eat two a week keep room temp at 85 cage hot spot about 90. she does look a bit under fed try live prey at night with lights out. temps of low 70s is to low for them unless they are breeding.

at first i thought it was dehydration but ive been misting her and her humidaty is at 62% in her tube its like her head got like that from too much moisture from the splilled water over night because thats ween it all started ..but on a good note she did feed today so shes eatin and thats allways good sign.head is still really bad thou.look at the head colsely and u will see were the skin kinda goes into a pintch almost.

Otherwise, if you are concerned, sunk-inness can be a result of dehydration and you can soak him/her for 30 minutes a day in nice room temp or luke warm water for a few straight days and make sure the humidity level stays above 55%

Hey guys I want to get back into large snakes again. It's been over 12 years since I used to breed and keep burmese pythons.
I want to get into AlbinoSunfire RETICS, but as much as I would like to get all albino suns for a small breeding group I just cannot afford to do so.
I was thinking of getting a small group of normal Clark strain albino girls, raising them up to adult and then using an albinoSUN male to breed back to them.
Will this work? To make it as simple as could be, what would result from the following :
WhiteAlbinoSUNFIRE bred to WhiteAlbinoCLARK ? I'm guessing all white albinos but would there be any whitealbinoSUNS in the clutch?

White albino (normal) x white albino sunfire will give you all white phase, with half of the clutch being sunfire
The theory on the Clark strain albinos are as follows
White x white = all whites
White x lavender = half whites, half lavs
White x purple - all lavs
lav x purple = half lavs, half purps
purple x purple = all purples.
Sunfire x normal = half suns, half normals

In theory, yes. You should get half and half, 25% supersuns, 50% normal suns, 25% normals (all purples or lavs)

But to answer your general topic question, Travis is not the only one, but one of very few these days that still breed a clutch or two a season of sd's. Jay and Bob still do. I think Jason Gaspar still does Jamps, although he retired he original big jamp girl that his dad had and raised. I believe Kevin still does some pure sd stuff. Gavin may do some, but I dont think so.

Pretty much. What you have to remember, many breeders are breeding morphs into these true sd's to bring crazy morph size down. With each generation that gets bred we get closer and closer to the size of true sd's with the morphs in them, but they will never be true pure sd's. Very few people still dabble in pure dwarf and/or sd's. Also, keep in mind, it is an accepted "rule" that anything that is 50% dwarf or sd is still considered dwarf or sd, hence the snow retic for instance. The anery sd is a pure form, but it got bred into the albino to create the snow. So, actually and technically the first snow generation was 50% sd, but was sold as such due to it being greater than or equal to 50%. As the snow gets bred and bred and bred, the percentage of sd creeps up. Although, it will never be 100%, at some point it will be so close to 100% that it basically will be.

I've seen a lot of the tics people have bought from Travis are kalatoa/mainland crosses which leads me to believe I could get pure kalatoas from him(gotta call tomorrow). What about jampea,kayaudis, honey island? Is there really only a handfull of people breeding pure locals for the trade?
