I don't know it it is available in your area (where are you located?), but manzanita branches work well. they never rot, and have a very nice twisty appearance. you may be able to go out and collect some if it is native/introduced in your area. If not, try pet shops (especially any that cater to birds or reptiles). Here's an old pic of my henkeli viv where you can see how I used manzanita branches (you can barely see the branches anymore with how grown over they have become)
