Go with a savannah monitor. I had a female that grew to nearly 3 feet. She was calm, and a wonderful pet. She lived in a walk-in closet which I conveted to a monitor habitat. Just beware that when they want to, they can get nasty and a tail whipping can be painful from a full grown monitor. This is rarely the case with a well raised savannah, however.
