I live in CA and this is how it is for residents, you need a fishing license in order to collect. It cost about $35 for a yearlong. Each license holding member of your party can collect up to 4 Cal Kings. They may be exported but only for personal, not commercial use. I am pretty sure it is the same for nonresidents except the fishing license probably costs more. Other things that may intrest you: Each license holder may also collect 1 L. zonata (excluding L. z. pulchra and any west of Interstate-5 in Los Angeles county and south), 2 rosy boas and 4 gophersnakes. Most everything else except prohibited species is a limit of 2. You can't hunt in State and National Parks or in designated Wilderness Areas but you can in National Forest and on Beauroe of Land Management areas. Check with California Fish & Game Department to make sure, they will I think be happy to send you a copy of the regs. Also of intrest is that unless there is rain which is rare in June the best method of collecting will be nightdriving or nightwalking. Cal Kings are very abundant pretty much throughout the state anywhere below 2,000 feet. Open grassland with nearby water is the best. Marshland is good. Rocky desert is also good but harder than grassland. Avoid areas with dense canopy.
