Life Span of the African Mud Turtle

What is the average life span of the African mud, or side-necked, turtles? I bought one from Petco, and they say he's around 1 years of age. I'm not sure if they're trustworthy! Don't they collect them wild? I thought there aren't a lot of people who breed them.
