My understanding is that there were too few alvarezi samples in that study to be anywhere near definitive.

This was made a moot point in Beck's book. The study referenced there (Douglas, et. al., 2003) Douglas, Beck, and Sullivan found evidence that seems to show a greater divergence between the H. horridum subspecies than what is typical of full species. I personally don't think they qualify as full species, but the currently designated subspecies should remain intact.
