I haven't kept blue spinys, but I've kept Yarrows which are also livebearers. I think as the developing young take up more space, there's less room in the stomach for food, so the female takes in less food. I've noticed that egglaying species definitely also spend a lot of time basking under the lights for a week or so before laying their eggs, so that might be another sign.
