I just bought what i believe is a desert horned lizard from a crappy little pet store. they didnt have any kind of heat or UV lights on him and were only feeding him crickets. It is my first horned lizard, but ive been reading a ton of information on them for the past few weeks. For right, now since im not sure if hes in good shape and i dont know if he will actually make it, he is in a 20 long aquarium with play sand as a substrate. I have a UV light on him and a heat light. I also have a small heating pad on the bottom, but im not sure if its doing much. Anyway, the basking area is about 100 degrees and the cool side is about 85 degrees. i know they dont usually drink out of a dish or anything but i put a small one in there because im not sure if he got much water where he was before. I ordered some harvester ants, but im giving him tiny crickets with vitamin powder for now. I have a piece of driftwood in there and a little log cave thing. Is there anything else he needs right now in there? Is there anything i can do to tell if hes in good shape? He seems to be alert and goes after the crickets like crazy. I dont know how old he is or if its a boy or girl. Also, he is pretty dark colored, like a charcoal grey with red and orange on him. Is that normal or is he stressed out? i didnt know if they came in darker colors. if there is anything else i can do please let me know. Thanks!
