Steve Irwin died and I thought it was an internet joke. I think of this guy and I think invincible (yes, like that article said)...I really was shocked and suprisingly upset. Best of luck to his family, and friends. The herpetological world had, in my eyes, a great loss in connection to the world. He did shocking things, but from all I've heard of the general public, it is strongly understood that he wishes to conserve and convays that to the public, his unending love for the rapidly depleting wildlife.
I know for a fact there are people out there who don't rake snakes to death because Steve Irwin existed. I still can't believe it...if it turned out to be a joke I'd still be unsuprised. I pray for his wife and kids. He was hope and proof to me that people could abandon supersitious ways of reptiles, insects and such...
I really think the world lost something here.
