A long time ago, before we knew better we had larger gravel on the bottom but after the hundreth time rinsing out the rocks, it got old, and the rocks got tossed. its hard becuae of the constant water changing, and the rocks collect a LOT of feces/ scutes etc so the filter cant. if youve got the spotties in a half-half tank, your best bet is to use a water proof tank grass and put a small cat litter pan into the tank (with obvious means of entrance and egress) and use that as a pool.. it will make cleaning so much easier.
