I'm not sure if there have been any very recent publications on the subject, but the tendency these days is to treat the river cooters and Florida cooters as two subspecies of a single species (P. c. concinna and P. c. floridana), with floridana on the Atlantic slope and Florida, and concinna in the Gulf drainages. This seems to be based on one paper (sorry, I can't seem to find the reference). However, that paper totally ignored the presence of a taxon formerly called P. floridana hoyi, which occurs in the range of P. c. concinna and does not intergrade with it. If no one has looked into this problem yet, it would make for a good thesis!
