Chris,
Make sure you read the professional reviews on websites like Steve's Digicams and dpreview.com. The difference between those reviews and the kind of feedback you will get here is that the people doing the pro reviews have tried ALL the similar cameras and know what's good and what's not about the D50.
Most personal reviews will tell you "I have this camera and I love it - here's a pic". But those people have never held or used a Canon Rebel XTi, Pentax K110D, a Sony A-100, a Konica Minolta 5D, or any of the other competitors at that entry level DSLR market. So why they may love their camera, how do they know how it compares to the others? Make an educated decision.
Don't let the Nikon fans tell you it is superior just because it says Nikon on the camera. That simply isn't true.
One thing I will tell you about the Nikon is that it's kit lens is superior to the Canon offering (of course, every camera's kit lens is better than the Canon kit lens!). However, other Nikon lenses, while good, are expensive. The off-brand lenses Sigma/Tamron/Tokina are good and cheaper, but the Nikkor lenses are priced up just for the name. In many cases the off brand lenses actually score higher on technical reviews, but the Nikkor offering costs 40% more.
Their flash technology is superior to the Canon flash system as well.
Then again. None of that matters. The D50 is a good little camera (it is too small for my hands). But I wouldn't buy it without comparing the Sony, Canon, Pentax, and Olympus offerings. ----- Chris Harrison San Antonio, Texas
