I wonder if it had been a victim of 'gigging' (chopping off the legs of toads for frog-legs) earlier in its life. I'm not sure if toads can survive that, but I know it is really common for people to just cut the legs off of live toads/frogs and throw them back. At least in the southern states where I live.
