4 different genera popped into my mind that are sometimes referred to as "leaf turtles". Cyclemys dentata darkens with age, and can be almost totally black. The others are rarely as dark.

I haven't seen many C. dentata, and it could be some kind of morph. More than likely, it is just some local variation in color. People are always trying to put some kind of "brand name" on unusually colored herps.

Sometimes, the price of the animal can give you an idea if it's a rare species or a true genetic morph. Of course, you have to be careful with that also...I saw a rather common looking box turtle on sale for $3,000 once. It must have laid golden eggs.
