They estivate. They develop a thick layer of skin, sort of might look like a cocoon, to trap in moisture and help them to breathe. This would probably happen at extreme temperatures or periods of dryness. If this is the case simply correcting your temperatures and making sure the area is moist, as it should be, would bring it back to "life".
