which gulf island(s) did you go to? i have been having a hard time finding the newts here on southern vancouver island. was hoping to get some pics, but taking forever!
my 2003 in bc was:
common garters (3 ssp)
northwestern garter
wandering garter
painter turtle
red ear sliders
north aligator liz
euro wall liz
red leg frogs
pacific tree frogs
bull frogs
red back sallys
1 newt!!! 
went to the states for a few weaks and found:
gopher snake
rattler (same ssp as BC native)
racer (ssp?)
sagebrush liz
leopard liz
fence liz
spiny liz
bull frogs
and some type of big toad in the snake river close to lewiston.
