I have found the majority of my red-bellies under logs. This where they rest and find their prey which consists of insects (especially slugs). I have found one out on a rocky beach. But I would say your best chance is carefully flipping logs.

As far as Milks go.... There is a herper on here named Stewart Stick. He has a great milk spot in or near Peterborough. Ask him if he'd be willing to take you out there. I believe that he can almost promise milks on a given day. Not sure how willing he is to take strangers to his spot though?
