ADVERTISER NEWS (Vernon, New Jersey) 02 February 07 Volunteers needed for amphibian crossing survey at Wildlife Refuge Sussex: all those interested in getting a close look at New Jersey’s frogs, toads and salamanders and wanting to help them get safely to their breeding pools should plan to attend the volunteer orientation meeting at the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16. This spring, the Friends of the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge will join with the Wildlife Conservation Corps of the New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Endangered and Non-Game Species Program and the New Jersey Audubon Society to conduct an amphibian inventory along various roads within the refuge. The surveys will take place at night, sometime in mid-March to early April, depending on weather conditions. The purpose of the initial survey will be to determine the rate of crossing as well as the mortality rate. A minimum of one half hour is to be spent at each site recording the number of live frogs and salamanders crossing the road, as well as any that are found dead along with the volume of traffic. Based on the data gathered, a determination can be made as to whether a particular location warrants consideration as a rescue site for future crossings. Volunteers will be required to register with the New Jersey Wildlife Conservation Corps and must be 18 or older. Mike Anderson, the Program Director for New Jersey Audubon’s Scherman/Hoffman Sanctuary, will present the orientation program for volunteers at the Refuge Headquarters on Route 565 in Vernon. If interested in volunteering, contact Ken Witkowski at 973-208-9808 or kenwitkowski@yahoo.com. Volunteers needed for amphibian crossing survey at Wildlife Refuge
