ALthough there is not a tegu that can be kept in a 20 gallon tank, even for the first year, not all speices need a 6'-8' cage size. My baby blue tegu is currently housed in a 20 gallon and now at 6 months old is getting way to big for it, his around 20" now and is moving this weekend into his new cage. So there is your answer to the no on the 20 gallon tank.

Also Blue tegus are much smaller then there argintian look alikes. They reach around 3 feet in length and need about a 4'-5' cage, depending on size and how much roam time they get. I personaly think Tegus are a descent first pet lizard, much better than an iguana althought i still think the number one choices are the bearded dragon and leopard geckos.

Keep doing your resurch and if you're still not sure, try a beardie they make great pets and are really forgiving, also an adult can easily be house in a 100 gallon, heck u can have a trio in that.
