Thanks for your thoughts. The bedding seems more like soil than wood, but who knows?



Since I posted, I saw something that suggested that one of the causes could be overfeeding. That may have been the case here. We were going away for a week, and left several crickets and waxworms in the tank for the two toads to eat while we were gone. When we returned, both toads looked quite well-fed.
