The top one is a young Yellow-Bellied Slider (Trachemys scripta) the lower one is a False Map Turtle (Graptemys pseudogeographica). You are going to need to take the yellow-bellied to a vet and have the ear abscess lanced, cleaned, and started on an anti-biotics routine. Good chance this abscess was formed from poor water quality in that small tank your friend had, so be sure to keep the water extra clear, especially during the healing process. These are very popular pet turtles, so information on their care is abundant in books and on the web.
