If the autofocus is not focusing on the spot you want it to, there are a few options. The easiest will work with any autofocus camera or lens.

Half-press the shutter button to lock the focus.

Move the camera until the desired spot is in focus.

Fully press the shutter button to take the picture.

Take lots of pictures.


otherwise, you might be able to change the size of the focus reticle to center focus, spot focus, or moveable focus. That way you could select a smaller area to focus on, and the background wouldn't compete with the foreground for focus as much. Without any knowledge of the camera I can't say if you can or can't. Manual focus might help too, but most digicam manual focus mechanisms are dodgy at best.
