Consult with others has not indicated that the sub species grows much larger but perhaps it tops at 4-6. I saw that picture you mentioned and have that book actually and have not seen similiar reactions in the individuals that were nawed upon several times. But regardless, I always manage them with respect and utilize hooks and gloves when moving them to clean their cages.
