I have not seen any over 4 feet long and perhaps this female is the longest I've the opportunity to view. Consult with others has not indicated that the sub species grows much larger but perhaps it tops at 4-6. I saw that picture you mentioned and have that book actually and have not seen similiar reactions in the individuals that were nawed upon several times. But regardless, I always manage them with respect and utilize hooks and gloves when moving them to clean their cages.
