I think this may be better posted to field notes,but....
Early this week my son and I were out and about when we saw some ripples in a pond.When we went back to look,there were two largecommon snappers "dancing" in the water.After several courtship bouts,blowing bubbles and whatnot,the smaller of the two tried to mount the other.After some confusion,we could see the two of them clasping each other plastron to plastron.They seperated and started the "dance again after 5-8 minutes,this happened three times while we had time to watch.Each time they ended up plastron to plastron.
I have seen common snappers breed in the wild in the past.All the literature I can find,and personal experience says the breed with the male atop the female. Has anyone seen or heard of the plastron to plastron behaviour?
