I think the yellow and black leucs you are referring to are the Dendrobates leucomelas, aka "bumble-bee darts." These are one of the very best darts for beginners. They are relatively bold and get along well in groups, which is important. Some species are very territorial and need to be kept singly or in mated pairs. The leucomelas are also among the least expensive. The D. auratus are also easy keepers and good groupies, although some color morphs or individual lines can be rather shy. Phyllobates terribilis is also a very nice beginner specie. The mint greens are the most readily available, but they aren't just "another green frog." Photos don't do them justice. They have a silvery iridescent sheen-- and great personalities.



There are other easy group frogs, but I'm just mentioning those that are in the lower cost range. A lot of people will recommend D. tinctorius or D. azureus. They are bold and easy, but are extremely territorial, especially the females, so you'd need to get either a sexed pair or keep a single frog.
