The general consensus is that mixing species is always bad, not matter what species, no matter the conditions. But a 300 gallon tank is a little different...I don't think 40 gallons is big enough for mixing, at least with azureus. I have a 55 gallon and after all the plants, water feature, and background there isn't as much room as I thought there would be. I've heard of species other than azureus being mixed successfully, but I can't quote any of them.
