THE TENNESSEAN (Nashville, Tennessee) 17 July 07 Remember, snakes protected (Larry Woody)
Over the weekend I was having lunch in a small general store near Gladeville when I overheard a conversation between a couple of locals. One was describing two huge rattlesnakes he had killed.
Apparently he didn't realize he was boasting about breaking the law. In Tennessee it is a serious game-law violation to kill any snake, poisonous or nonpoisonous.
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency says its officers use "common sense" in enforcing the law. If a deadly rattler crawls into a backyard or playground where children are playing, you're probably on safe ground to dispatch it.
As for killing a nonpoisonous snake that represents no threat to anyone, there's no excuse. And once you've read this, you can't plead ignorance of the law.
