If you want something easy, go with the southern ringneck snakes. I've dealt with many of those, they are easy to keep, feed, and breed. They stay small, you'll be lucky to get one at 14", but they eat just about anything. I've had specimens that would take worms, fish, frogs, anoles, snakes and scented pinkies all in the course of a month or two.
