Your eggs are using oxygen even right now. Eggs absorb oxygen and exhaust CO2.

I did take them out as they hatched.

You can poke a few holes if you want, but make them very small holes and check the dampness of the medium.

I use saran wrap over the eggs held on by rubber band - and two weeks ago, I noticed that I had not properly put the rubber band on, there was saran wrap edge not under it resulting in a path for humidity to escape. It stayed humid enough though, so a few small holes for air exchange shouldn't pose a problem.
