Nice looking lizard, definitely an alligator lizard as already suggested. There are a few of these lizards in California, depending on area they are found. Below is a link showing California reptile species. If you scroll down about half way you see a bunch of alligator lizards with good pictures. It sort of looks like a Shasta Alligator Lizard but yours looks darker.

These lizards will puff up when feeling threatened, so that may be why it looks pregnant. I don't think any will still have eggs/or live young as some are live bearers) this late in the summer. Unless they double clutch in the wild.
