Well, I used to use Cypress mulch for my 2 basilisk, but the crickets being brown, blended in quite nicely with the brown mulch. I went with some very thin carpet from Home Depot (it was 44cents per square foot). The crickets stands out, and even though they can hide under the logs, some plants etc, they have to come out eventually. I'd suggest using the carpet from home depot. However, don't get the longer carpet that can get fuzzy etc, as the Lizards can eat pieces of it: the carpet i'm talking about can be used for outdoor or indoor use (water resistant, and won't mold). I'm currently building a 6 foot long, 5 feet tall, 4 feet wide enclosure for my 2 basilisk, looking good so far .
