new to pacman feeding question

hi ive recently purchased a fine young pacman link and i am very excited to get to feed it some mice once it grows up big and strong but to get to my point ive had Link for about 10 days he ate 4 crickets the first night then didnt eat for 2-3 days then he ate around 2 crickets he is currently only eating around 2-3 crickets per day is this normal? and he doesnt run around and eat them but some how eats them while im asleep is there any way to prevent crickets from climbing my plants? i put about 6 crickets in per day and i always find they climb straight up the plants and stay there
