PATTAYA CITY NEWS (Thailand) 14 August 07 We investigate an unusual Turtle discovered in a small fishing village. We have an unusual story now for you coming from a small fishing village located in Na-Jomtien sub-district just outside of Pattaya. We were called in on Tuesday Morning to inspect an unusual soft-shelled turtle which has a tail similar to that of a crocodile. The strange creature was discovered by Khun Santi who lives at the village and spends his days fishing for shells to sell at local markets. He believes this to be a rare mutation of a Turtle which should be documented by the press. Well, we hate to spoil his excitement but we have done some research and believe this to be a well known species of Turtle known as a Snapping Turtle which has a large head, long tail and a short temper, similar to the one featured in this story. Snapping turtles are so named because they defend themselves by snapping and biting aggressively when handled or otherwise bothered. They are most common in large, permanent, quiet bodies of water, such as ponds, lakes, swamps, canals and rivers. This turtle weighs in at 9.9kgs and measures 24 inches in length and has certainly turned many heads in the village, but we regretfully inform the villagers that the discovery of this Turtle is unlikely to make them famous.
