I must ask, if he has had it for a while, why aren't you taking him to the vet? It could be a rub-wound. It could be a vitamin deficiency. It could be a burn. It could be a really bad infection. He may need antibiotics, better supplements, protection from the light bulb hanging above him, any number of things. A vet would need to check this out.
