Yes and No.

It is now illegal to sell a "normal phase" red-eared slider in Florida, except to licensed dealers who then re-sell out of state or breed and sell out of state.

If you live in FL and already have a RES, then you're OK - but make sure you have fencing or planking burried at least 6" below ground if you have a backyard pond with sliders. HOWEVER, you CANNOT breed your normal color phase sliders. It will be illegal to own a normal phase RES under 4" after January 1st, 2008.

Normal phase sliders can no longer be imported into FL unless going to a licensed dealer (most likely a commercial breeder/wholesaler). If you're trying to bring in your slider as part of a household move, contact Jenny Novak, Division of Habitat and Species Conservation, Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, 620 S. Meridian St., Tallahassee, FL 32301, or at jenny.novak@MyFWC.com or (850) 926-0128.

Color morphs (pastels, carmels, albinos, ect.) of red-eared sliders may still be traded, sold, and bred in the state of Florida.

This was to keep the non-native Red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) from interbreeding with native Yellowbellied sliders (T. scripta scripta) of Florida.

This went into affect on July 1st, 2007.
