The hellbenders are super cool, it's too bad the aren't widely disspersed and common, I have never seen one other than pictures. My guess is pollution and agricultural run off has had an impact on their numbers and reproduction. It would be nice if they reproduce in the proposed semi-captive experiment, perhaps they could start a stocking program, similar to the success with trout restocking.
