I have had snakes before climb shelves that you wouldn't beleave and ended up finding them on top of rodent cages licking there lips. Leaving the rodents out is a good idea just don't let them loose. I am also told you can leave flour in door openings to try to help track a snakes movements at night while you sleep but I have never had any luck with this.
